Briefly describe how a sociologist would study family processes

In this assignment, you will write an essay (550) addressing the following prompts. Cite two to four scholarly sources in your essay:

Firstly, Briefly describe how a sociologist would study family processes from the theoretical perspectives of structural functionalism, conflict, and social exchange. Give an example of each.

Secondly,  Describe the Standard North American (SNA) family

Thirdly,  Compare & contrast the SNA to one other family structure.

Fourthly, Explain how trends affect ethnic groups in the United States.

Furthermore, Compare & contrast social, cultural, and historical constructs to various types of families.

More details;

What are the theoretical perspectives?
Sociologists today employ three primary theoretical perspectives: the symbolic interactionist perspective, the functionalist perspective, and the conflict perspective. These perspectives offer sociologists theoretical paradigms for explaining how society influences people, and vice versa.

Sociologists study social events, interactions, and patterns, and they develop a theory in an attempt to explain why things work as they do. In sociology, a theory is a way to explain different aspects of social interactions and to create a testable proposition. It is call ed a hypothesis, about society (Allan 2006).

For example, although suicide is generally considered an individual phenomenon, Émile Durkheim was interested in studying the social factors that affect it. His studied social ties within a group, or social solidarity, and hypothesized that differences in suicide rates might be explained by religion-based differences. Durkheim gathered a large amount of data about Europeans who had ended their lives, and he did indeed find differences based on religion. Protestants were more likely to commit suicide than Catholics in Durkheim’s society, and his work supports the utility of theory in sociological research.

Firstly, Describe the research. What was the research question, what approach was use d to attempt to reduce prejudice/discrimination?

Secondly, What were the groups involved?

Thirdly, What was the outcome – that is, did the approach work?

3) Imagine you are a sociologist. You wish to apply the approach from the article to reduce prejudice and discrimination, but in a different context.

Further, How would you apply the approach to a different group. Or in a different location. Or circumstance than is given in the article?

Lastly, What changes would you make from the authors’ approach, and why?

Prejudice-Reduction Interventions

Having summarised some of the important theoretical contributions to prejudice-reduction, I will now present a summary of the main types of interventions with evidence on effectiveness, drawing on case studies and suggesting some principles which may be usefully applied elsewhere. Again it is vital to note that the case studies are not intend ed to be directly applicable to prejudice-reduction in Scotland. For instance, some of them talk about successful interventions to improve inter-group relations in post-conflict societies, which may be dealing with tensions that often spills over into actual (violent) conflict, and we may also assume that these are likely to be more ‘reactive’ than preventative. However, it may be appropriate to apply some of the ‘universal principles’ emerging from these to future strategies.

For the purposes of summary and analysis, the interventions that are most frequently studied and that are useful for this report can be roughly divided into three categories:

  1. Educational strategies (including but not limited to school-based interventions)
  2. Short-term diversity training courses
  3. Media campaigns

This assignment invites you to test some of the ideas contained in Acker & Donovan’s “Data Craft: A Theory/methods toolkit for critical internet studies.” — Which is uploaded to the files. As they argue, researchers are interested in how digital platforms mediate public discourse face a number of challenges in accessing “usable” datasets. These have to do primarily with the proprietary and “black boxed” nature of platform APIs (Application Programming Interface).

Your task is to employ some of Acker and Donovan’s suggestions for overcoming these research barriers.

You will search through social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram on the hunt for misinformation. The goal is to find and gather evidence of recent “data craft” campaigns in which groups or individual users have attempted to manipulate social media ecosystems by spreading information that is misleading, untrue, or “fake news.” Examples of what you are looking for can be found in Acker & Donovan’s discussion of the Russian Internet Research Agency, Zadrozny and Collins’s discussion of The Epoch Times, and ReplyAll’s investigation of QAnon. Be sure to engage each of these closely.

More details;

Once you have found evidence you suspect might be part of a coordinated misinformation campaign, use Acker & Donovan’s “step by step rubric” (pp. 9-15) for working with publicly available metadata (Timestamps, usernames, content tags, and follower lists, etc.). They suggest some ways we can gather. Also, analyze such metadata in order to draw conclusions about how disinformation campaigns are coordinate d. Intended to spread misinformation about a particular issue, person, or event.

You will submit (1) a 1500-word discussion paper of your findings, as well as (2) a “Research Appendix” that contains images, screenshots, and any other material related to your data set (such as Acker & Donovan include in their paper). Your discussion paper should summarize your experiences in gathering and working with such data. You should also develop an argument. Even if provisional – about what your data set seems to indicate or be evidence of.

Focus on the controversial topic of immigration and citizenship

This week, we focus on the controversial topic of immigration and citizenship. As you learned there have been several distinct waves of immigration in U.S. history, beginning with the conquest of Native Americans by Europeans. From 1840 to 1860, 4 million immigrants entered the United States mainly from north-western Europe, followed by another 25 million from 1880 to 1920. The “newest” immigrants are those arriving in the United States after 1960, some 24 million mainly from Latin America and Asia.

For this assignment, students will demonstrate and expand their knowledge and understanding on immigration and citizenship.
Within the presentation, students will answer the following questions:

Firstly, What is immigration and citizenship?

Secondly, List four reasons why people immigrate/migrate to the United States.

Thirdly, Identify and discuss three United States immigration laws.

Fourthly, Explain how immigration has at least 3 positive impacts on the United States.

Further, Explain how immigration has at least 3 negative impacts on the United States.

Moreover, Discuss sociological views on illegal immigration.

Apply three social concepts and one social theory.

Sociological theories include functionalism, conflict theory, feminist theory, symbolic interactionism, and others as mentioned in our readings and materials.

Discuss three ways to improve legal immigration.

Do not use unverifiable, secondary sites such as Wikipedia, about.com, ask.com, and similar. Use our course materials, peer-reviewed journal articles from the library, and other scholarly sources.
Include at least 3 peer-reviewed journal articles no more than five years old. Also include and apply what you learned from the textbooks and assigned readings.
The presentation should utilize sound critical thought and it should include appropriate APA in-text citations and full APA references at the end. To avoid academic dishonesty, as with all assignments and posts, most of the information presented should be in the students’ own words/voice.

Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse

Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse

This is an assignment that focuses on the Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse. The paper also requires reading of chapter 1 and chapter 4 of the book.

Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse

I‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍dentifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse: U.S. Marines Website [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5] Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 1: Introduction, and Chapter 4: Discourse Structure: Parts and Sequences in your textbook Discourse Analysis, watch the video How Do We Bend the Truth? The Linguistics of Propaganda and Censorship (Links to an external site.), and read the article Discourse Analysis—What Speakers Do in Conversation . For this discussion, you will analyze the following excerpt from the First to Fight (Links to an external site.) page of the U.S. Marines website.

You will use your preliminary knowledge of discourse analysis to uncover some of the linguistic features that work together to create an initial impression. The following excerpt appeared on the U.S. Marines webpage in 2015: First to Fight No one knows where the next conflict or crisis will emerge. Ridding the world of these threats requires a lightweight, nimble force that not only can respond rapidly, but also take control when it gets there. When unexpected threats arise, it is the Marine Corps that is best prepared to face them down. 6 Hours Marines are first to fight because of their culture and because they maintain a forward-deployed presence near various global hotspots.

The Marine Corps’ forward presence consists of multiple Marine Expeditionary Units, or MEUs. MEUs spend at least six months training for a variety of amphibious operations before they are deployed. Then, for six months at a time, Marine Expeditionary Units embark upon United States Navy warships. Prepare to launch a range of missions—from humanitarian and peacekeeping missions to full-scale combat engagements, on extremely short notice. Few have what it takes to become Marines, but now many have the opportunity to delve into the training and mindset of these elite, prepared warriors. This behind-the-scenes glimpse of an actual MEU training exercise reveals what it takes to maintain this constant state of readiness.

Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse

You’ve heard of their “First to Fight” reputation. Now see them earn it. In your initial post‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ing, Describe your overall impression of the excerpt. How would you describe the discourse: Is it informational or persuasive (or both)? List what you think are the most important verbs in the excerpt. (Example: can respond rapidly, or is best prepared.) Note if the verbs are transitive or intransitive. Are there any direct objects following the verbs you have chosen? Do you think that this type of verb usage is typical for an excerpt of this nature?

The Writing Center resource on Verbs (Links to an external site.). Also, on the Parts of Speech (Links to an external site.) can help you in identifying significant verbs. List what you think are the most important adjectives and adverbs in the excerpt. (Example: lightweight, nimble force, or respond ) How do the adjectives and adverbs contribute to the overall tone of the excerpt and the message conveyed?

The Writing Center resources on Adjectives (Links to an external site.) and Adverbs (Links to an external site.), and on the Parts of Speech (Links to an external site.) can help you in identifying significant adjectives and adverbs. List what you think are the most important nouns. (Example: conflict or crisis will emerge, or ridding the world of these threats.) How do the nouns, adjectives, and adverbs work together to set the tone and convey a specific message? The Writing Center resources on Nouns (Links to an external site.) and on the Parts of Speech (Links to an external site.) can help you in identifying significant verbs.

Identifying and Analyzing the Building Blocks of Discourse

Choose three of the units of discourse outlined in Table 4.1 and discussed in detail in Chapter 4 of your course textbook. Identify an example of each of those units in the excerpt. How is structure significant in shaping the discourse? How does structure help to create meaning and cohesion? Who do you think is the target audience? How do the lexical categories of grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) and units of discourse work together to effectively target a specific audience? Your initial post is due by Day 3 and must be at least 500 wor‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ds in length

Secondly, Higher marks can be earned if an essay demonstrates not just expository skill but analysis (identifying key elements of the topic, identifying assumptions pro and con, presenting a conclusion that competently rises from expository content).

Thirdly,  Highest marks for essays require going beyond exposition and analysis. In particular, a detailed interpretation of the question’s meaning and scope (presentation of relevant sources, strengths and weaknesses of alternative points of view). Highest commendation requires exposition and analysis and interpretation.
