Creation of a mini correlational design proposal for a dissertation

Instructions This assignment has two parts. The first part is a review of the dissertations to help you understand what to do into the dissertation phase of your work. The second part allows you to practice with a basic correlational design. Part 1 (3 points): For each of the three NCU dissertations listed in the Resources for this week, identify in one sentence each the problem, purpose, research questions, methodology and design. Finally why the methodology and design selected are appropriate to answer the research questions presented. Part 2 (7 points): Now that you have reviewed several correlational designs, it is time to practice creating your own mini-correlational study.

For this assignment, you will survey five people you know to practice working with quantitative data. Think of a problem you see in your daily life that can be addressed using correlational research. You will create a problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, and hypotheses that can best be addressed using correlational research. You will then demonstrate your ability to run a correlation with the data you collect. Keep this practice exercise very simple, as the main idea is to grasp the big picture concept of correlation rather than to create a complex study. For example, a problem in daily life you may notice that when you or your colleagues sit too long during the day energy levels suffer in the evening.

Purpose and question

Your purpose could be:

To determine if sitting too long during the day is related to low energy during the evening.

Your research question could be:

Ho‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍w does the amount of time sitting during the day relate to the evening energy level? You may reach out to family members, friends, and colleagues—either through work or by posting in the ID CoP—but abstain from referring to this as data collection or research, which would then require informed consent and an IRB review. In this example, your hypothesis might be the more hours a person spends sitting a day, the lower their reported energy level will be in the evening.

Your approach would then be to survey five friends, family members, or colleagues and ask them: (x) how many hours did you sit at your desk yesterday? And (y) on a scale of 1-10, what was your energy level last night? You could then calculate Pearson’s r for your data set to determine how your variables are correlated. As a reminder, you should have a basic idea of how to calculate Pearson’s r from your prior course work; so please, refer to that information.

For your practice, correlational study, include the following parts: One sentence statement of the problem (1 point) One sentence statement of the purpose (1 point) Research question (1 point) Hypothesis (1 point) Calculation of Pearson’s r (1 point) One- to two-sentence summary of your findings (1 point) One-paragraph reflection on how you might use correlational designs in your future research in Education (1 point) This assignment needs to have an Introduction and a Conclusion section for this submission.

Physiological and Psychological Knowledge-Choose one research article

Firstly, Choose one research article that includes either physiological or psychological knowledge.

Secondly, discuss how the knowledge would be used to influence the healthcare paradigm.

Lastly, Your initial posting should be 250 to 350 words in length. Utilize at least one scholarly source other than the textbook.

More details on the assignment:

What does physiological and psychological mean?
Physiological psychology is a subdivision of behavioral neuroscience that studies the neural mechanisms of perception and behavior through direct manipulation of the brains of nonhuman animal subjects in controlled experiments.
What are examples of physiological behaviors?
Manic-depressive illness, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia are other physiological behavior examples.
What is a physiological theory?
Physiological theories suggest that responses within the body are responsible for emotions. Neurological theories propose that activity within the brain leads to emotional responses. Cognitive theories argue that thoughts and other mental activity play an essential role in forming emotions.
Why do we study physiological psychology?
Physiological psychologists study behavioral phenomena that can be observe in nonhuman animals. They attempt to understand the physiology of behavior: the role of the nervous system, interacting with the rest of the body (especially the endocrine system, which secretes hormones), in controlling behavior.
What is physiological vs psychological?
To put it simply, physiology is to do with the body and psychology is to do with the mind. There is some overlap between psychology and physiology in that our mental processes are support by biochemical and electrical activity in the nervous system, especially the human brain.
Lastly, What are examples of physiological behaviors?
Manic-depressive illness, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia are other physiological behavior examples.

The Mixed methods and the value of research to social policy

Research Design
Mixed Methods and the Value of Research to Social and Public Policy Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 10 of the course text, watch the video Crime Spotting: Joy of Stats (1/6) ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en2ix9f8ceM&feature=youtu.be), review the media piece How Prohibition Encouraged Women to Drink ( https://daily.jstor.org/how-prohibition-made-womens-drinking-more-acceptable/?cid=soc_fb_JSTOR ) and the journal article, “Bootlegging Mothers and Drinking Daughters: Gender and Prohibition in Butte, Montana”. In this last discussion, we address mixed methods, which brings together quantitative and qualitative approaches in unique ways. This discussion will support you in understanding the unique application of mixed methods in research.

We will also bring the weeks of discussions together by addressing the value of understanding the human experience in society through research and specifically how research reporting can aid our understanding of social phenomena as well as influence social and public policy. In your initial post, address the following: Discuss the reasons for using mixed methods. Select one of the complex mixed-methods designs (experimental, case study, participatory-social justice, or evaluation).

The Mixed methods and the value of research to social policy

What is an example of a study you might conduct using that particular design? After watching the video Crime Spotting: Joy of Stats (1/6) ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en2ix9f8ceM&feature=youtu.be ), respond to the following: How does the City of San Francisco currently use its crime data?‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ Explain the value of this data to the citizens in the city and the police service. The level of data collection, police service planning, and community advocacy involved in the program highlighted in the video would add a significant financial cost to city operations.

Other than the safety of citizens and supporting police efforts, can you think of two key reasons why San Francisco city leaders would want the city to be safe? As an example of another form of research reporting; we can also be informed of the human experience through a review of historical and secondary data. After reading the media piece “How Prohibition made Women’s Drinking More Acceptable” ( https://daily.jstor.org/how-prohibition-made-womens-drinking-more-acceptable/?cid=soc_fb_JSTOR ) and the journal article, “Bootlegging Mothers and Drinking Daughters: Gender and Prohibition in Butte, Montana” ( https://www-jstor-org.proxy-library.ashford.edu/stable/2713337?seq=1#metadata_info_tab_contents ), respond to the following: Indicate the social problems or issues highlighted in this research article.

Explain the experience of women in Butte, Montana during the prohibition. How were their actions a reflection of their social circumstances? How can an understanding of the society of prohibition era Butte, Montana, help us understand society today? What does it say about the effects of public policy on society? Your initial post should be at least 650 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite ‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍any references

Research, compose, and type a scholarly paper based on the scenario

Firstly, Research, compose, and type a scholarly paper based on the scenario described below, and choose a conclusion scenario to discuss within the body of your paper. Reflect on lessons.

Secondly, The length of the paper should be four pages. Exclude the title page and the reference page. Limit the references to a few key sources (minimum of three required).

Thirdly, The paper will contain an introduction that catches the attention of the reader, and states the purpose of the paper. Also, provides a narrative outline of what will follow (i.e., the assignment criteria).

Fourthly, discuss the scenario in relation to HIPAA, legal, and other regulatory requirements that apply to the scenario. Also, the ending you chose. Demonstrate support from sources of evidence (references) included as in‐text citations.

Possible endings;

Furthermore, Choose and identify one of the four possible endings provided for the scenario. Construct your paper based on its implications to the scenario.

Make recommendations about what should have been done. What could be done to correct or mitigate the problems caused by the scenario and the ending you chose.

Additionally, Present the advantages and disadvantages of using smartphones and social media in healthcare and describe professional and ethical principles to the appropriate use of this technology, based on facts from supporting sources of evidence, which must be included as in‐text citations.

Lastly, The paper’s conclusion should summarize what you learned and make reflections about them to your practice learned in this class about technology, privacy concerns, and legal and ethical issues and addressed each of these concepts in the paper, reflecting on the use of smartphones and social media in healthcare.

Consider the consequences of such a scenario. Do not limit your review of the literature to the nursing discipline only because other health professionals are using the technology. You may need to apply critical thinking skills to its applications in this scenario.

Research case study analysis on its purpose and hypothesis

Research case study analysis on its purpose and hypothesis

This is an assignment that focuses on the research case study analysis on its purpose and hypothesis in general. The paper will provide additional information for the paper.

Research case study analysis on its purpose and hypothesis

For this week, we will use one research study article to practice how to read and summarize scientific articles. You will read a research article and write a 2–4 page summary. Your article summary should include the following information:
What was the purpose of the study? What were the research questions/hypotheses? (you can quote the hypotheses but also try to explain the relationships proposed in your own words – you may need to research some terminology).
What sample(s) did the author(s) use for this study?
What were the methods of the study? How was the data collected or generated [Did they survey people at one time or across time? Did they observe behaviors? Did they conduct an experiment? Did they rely on archival data? etc.]? What did they do to analyze the data?) Were the hypotheses supporting or not? What was the overall conclusion? What are the implications of the study? How do the results of this study broaden our understanding of leadership?

Tips

Here are some tips to help you start: The abstract gives an overview of the article; it helps you understand the research foc‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍us/question/hypothesis, general method, and most important results of the study. While you are reading the paper, you can always go back to the abstract as a way to remind you the overall purpose of the study. The literature review/introduction of an article is usually intended first to summarize the existing research about the topic of the paper. Then, second to illustrate why the current study is important and how it can close research gaps. From this section, you will find information on what we already know, what we don’t know and what will be found out from the study.

The method section is very important in a scientific article because it helps the audience to understand under what circumstances the research happened. And it also helps other scholars to replicate the research if necessary. When you are not familiar with some statistical terms, you should not spend a lot of time trying to understand every word in the results section. You should focus on which of the hypotheses are supportive and which are not. The last section of an article designation is usually to draw overall conclusions from the study and describe limitations and implications. This is an important summary section of any article
