CRITICAL THINKING EXERCISE RESPONDING TO A CRISIS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND IRAN Situation: Relations between the United States and Iran have continued to deteriorate. US intelligence analysts have also come to the conclusion that Iran has created a nuclear warhead that they will eventually be able to use to attack Israel and many other US allies in the Middle East. As a result, leaders in the ____________ political party are now suggesting that America prepare for war with Iran. It is their conviction that the US should consider engaging in both a pre-emptive missile strike upon Iran and a subsequent invasion of the country. Assignment: As a member of a special intelligence assessment team, you have been asked by the President of the United States to outline a list of reasons why 1)such a missile attack and subsequent invasion would be difficult to execute and of limited success or 2)such a missile attack and subsequent invasion would be challenging but could be successful. Therefore, in order to properly respond to this request by the President you have to: 1) become very familiar with Iranian (or Persian) history, culture, politics, military strengths and weaknesses, geography, and the history of their relationship with the United States over the last century and 2) use this information to construct a list of at least ten reasons why such an attack would be difficult to execute and of limited success or why such an attack and invasion could succeed— that you can support with data gathered from your research of the subjects listed in part 1). In other words, you have to engage in research in order to discover all you can. 3) Then you have to prepare a typed list of your ten reasons that include at least four supports (or justifications) for each reason (typed below each reason). This material should be prepared in complete sentences and should include specific references to the different sources you use.
