Unit 2 Assignment: Psychological Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards

For this week’s Assignment you will examine the APA Code of Ethics and also the Ethical Principles of Psychologist and Code of Conduct articles. Review and select from one of the (4) ethical dilemmas listed below and summarize how this it is a violations to the APA ethics of best practices and discuss the specific codes of violation. Evaluate the ethical violations and address how these issues affect the validity of the assessment outcome with scholarly journal articles.

Ethical Dilemmas:

1.) Firstly, a parent wants their child in a gifted/accelerated program, he/she offers the psychologist a payoff incentive to ensure that the scores exceed the selection criteria.
2.) Secondly, the psychologist is bias in custody/divorce cases and offers preferential treatment in their court reports to one parent causing the court to select that parent for primary or sole custody.
3.)Thirdly, a psychologist lives in a rural area and often lacks funding to update the assessment tools used, most inventories are not culturally sensitive or were not developed/standardized/normed for the clients’ dominant language.
4.) Fourthly, a clinician often tests in unsuitable conditions by having clients that are not comfortable with technology or computer assessments. The examiner often conducts testing without breaks or reading the instructions. He/she allows untrained staff to administer tests, and testing rooms are unacceptable i.e. hot/cold/rooms or construction noise outside the building.

Write a 5-7 page essay incorporating the following elements based on your findings:

Discuss the ethical case scenario and applicable qualities that relate to the APA ethical codes.
Write your own critical review on the infractions and your analysis on how to address the problems noted.
Take an affirmative position on whether or not these ethical challenges affect the validity of the case.

Much of what we tend to focus on when we study social psychology are topics that often have a negative connotation such as conformity, prejudice, aggression or obedience. A huge component of the study of social psychology; however, focuses on prosocial behavior – behaviors that focus on compassion and helping others. For this activity, you will focus on this more uplifting aspect of social psychology. Topics that fall under the area of prosaically behavior include altruism, helping, bystander intervention, empathy, and compassion, among others.

For this exercise, pick one day and seek to structure your thoughts and behaviors entirely around helping others. With each interaction or action you take, pause to think and ask yourself “is there a way I might help another here?” Hold a door for someone, offer your seat, share a smile, and give a sincere compliment, show empathy to another, attempt to be more patient or understanding, etc. Your efforts should be in social settings that involve interactions with others (rather than something such as donating to a charity for instance). The goal is to be as thoughtfully prosocial in your interactions throughout the day as possible.

At the beginning of the day, jot down your general mood, feelings, attitude, etc.
Then throughout the day, whenever possible, carry a small notebook with you or make notes in an app on your phone to jot down meaningful encounters or experiences as you attempt to engage in prosocial behaviors.
At the end of the day, again reflect and take notes on how you feel, your general mood, feelings and attitudes, etc.

In a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation, not counting title or reference slides:

Summarize your experience.

Describe the prosocial behaviors you engaged in, others’ reactions to these behaviors.

Your assessment of any changes in mood, attitude, good fortune, or anything else of note you experienced.

Review what you have learned about human behavior in social settings this week in your readings. Connect what you learned or experienced through your day of conscious, prosocial behavior with the terms, concepts, and theories from your research. Integrate at least two academic sources (your assigned
readings/resources can comprise one of these sources), citing any references used in APA format.
Describe any new insights you gained through this experience about your interactions with others on a daily basis. Including any behaviors you wish to change or to continue.
Use the features of PowerPoint to your advantage to communicate your ideas. Include pictures, audio recorded narration, speaker’s notes, video, links, etc. as appropriate to enhance your ideas.
Include an APA formatted title slide and reference slide. APA components such as an abstract, headings, etc. are not required since this is a PowerPoint presentation.

More details;

What are psychological disorders?

Psychological disorders, also referred to as mental disorders, are abnormalities of the mind that result in persistent behavior patterns that can seriously affect your day-to-day function and life. Many different psychological disorders have been identified and classified, including eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa; mood disorders, such as depression; personality disorders, such as antisocial personality disorder; psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia; sexual disorders, such as sexual dysfunction; and others. Multiple psychological disorders may exist in one person.

The specific causes of psychological disorders are not known, but contributing factors may include chemical imbalances in the brain, childhood experiences, heredity, illnesses, prenatal exposures, and stress. Some disorders, such as borderline personality and depression, occur more frequently in women. Others, such as intermittent explosive disorder and substance abuse, are more common in men. Still other disorders, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, affect men and women in roughly equal proportions.

When a person experiences mood or cognitive problems or behavioral issues for a long time, a psychological evaluation may be beneficial, and a diagnosis of a psychological disorder may follow. Treatment frequently involves psychotherapy to work on behaviors, skill development, and thought process. A person may be hospitalized for coexisting medical problems, serious complications, severe disorders, or substance abuse. Medications can be quite helpful for some psychological disorders.

Why is legislation important in mental health?

The main purpose of mental health legislation is to ensure that people with serious mental disorders can be treated. They can be treated without consent where it is necessary to prevent them from harming themselves or others. . If they fail to comply with their treatment plan they can be recall ed to hospital.

What is the difference between statutory and non-statutory services?

The difference between a statutory and a non-statutory service is that a statutory service is paid by tax payers, funded by the government and is set up by the law. They are usually uniform and highly professional an example would be the Emergency Services and the Armed Forces.

What are ethical considerations?

Firstly, Ethical values are essential for all healthcare workers.

Secondly, Ethical practice is a foundation for nurses, who deal with ethical issues daily.

Lastly, Ethical dilemmas arise as nurses’ care for patients.

Secondly, after you have identified your variables in the first part, design three types studies that involve the below features;

1) an observational study (as an initial assessment of your concepts),

2) a survey study (to measure simple correlation between your two variables)

3) an experimental study (to measure cause and effect between your two variables).

Lastly, keep the same topic and same variables for each study, only cha‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍nge how you are conducting the study and testing your hypothesis in each study. Additionally, define operationalization. Describe for me each study, how you would set it up and measure (operationalize) the variables. State your hypothesis for each study. Also,do not forget to make a simple statement about the internal or external validity for each study. Chapter 20 – Assignment

Ms. B was told that she had a brain aneurysm.  She made an advance statement of wishes saying that she did not want surgery if the aneurysm burst.  However, shortly after she made this statement of wishes, the aneurysm burst and a team of surgeons took her to surgery believing that if not treated with surgery she would surely die.  The hospital (Hospital #1) backed the decision of the surgeons thinking if there was no intervention the hospital would be liable for her death. This all happened as the family were alerted to the emergency and also were making travel arrangements as they were all from out-of-town.

Unfortunately, the outcome of the surgery was that she became ventilator-dependent paralyzed from the neck down and needing 24-hour care.  Once the family was in the hospital, they held a family conference agreeing that Ms. B would not want to continue on in this state, and they petitioned the hospital to remove her from the ventilator. The hospital refused still believing the potential for legal ramifications.  The family was distraught; but eventually, with the guidance of a lawyer they retained, they were able to have her transferred to another facility (Hospital #2) that was willing to take her off the ventilator knowing that the chances of her making it were slim.  The felt that they were honoring her wishes along with her families’ wishes.
