Nature vs. Nurture Psychology Essay

Nature vs. Nurture Psychology Essay

This week you will explore the issue of Nature vs. Nurture in psychology with two very powerful and emotional case studies.
The nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The debate centers on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and environmental factors to human development.
After watching David Reimer’s case study (https://youtu.be/JfeGf4Ei7F0), please explore the nature vs. nurture issue.
A document is attached to guide your learning.
Please answer the following questions:
1. Some people have argued that the Johns Hopkins psychologist used this opportunity as an experiment to test his nurture theory of gender identity. What are the expected results of this experiment, assuming that the nurture theory is valid?
2. According to the nurture theory, predict the gender identity Bruce would express if he were not subjected to gender re-assignment surgery and raised as a boy?
3. What, if any, aspects of David’s experiences support the nurture theory of gender identity?
4. What, if any, aspects of David’s experiences support the nature theory of gender identity
Now after watching the case study of Genie (https://youtu.be/VjZolHCrC8E) who spent her early life chained in her bedroom, answer the following questions:
1. What is sensitive period in development and what evidence did we find with Genie’s progress in language development to support the idea of sensitive period?
2. What are some physical, emotional, and social consequences of Genie’s deprivation in her nurturing environment? In other words, how did the abusive home environment affect Genie’s physical, emotional, social, and language development?
What did you learn about the relative importance of Nature and Nurture in human development?

Firstly,  Define and Explain Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning

Secondly, Define and Explain Skinner’s Operant Conditioning

Thirdly,  How are classical and operant conditioning alike and how are they different?

Fourthly, How has your life been affected by classical and operant conditioning?

More details;

Both classical conditioning and operant conditioning are processes that lead to learning. Classical conditioning pairs two stimuli, while operant conditioning pairs behavior and response. The learning occurs before the response in classical conditioning and after the response in operant conditioning.
Operant conditioning is a method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behaviour. Through operant conditioning, an individual makes an association between a particular behaviour and a consequence (Skinner, 1938). … Skinner’s views were slightly less extreme than those of Watson (1913).
What are the similarities of classical and operant conditioning?
Classical and operant conditioning are both similar because they involve making association between behaviour and events in an organism’s environment and are governed by several general laws of association – for example, it is easier to associate stimuli that are similar to each other and that occur at similar times.

Health and wellness are important for everyone—students included. Not only will you do better in school when your health is good, but you’ll be happier as a person. And the habits you develop now will likely persist for years to come. That means that what you’re doing now in terms of personal health will have a huge influence on your health throughout life and also can help you avoid many serious diseases.

Considerable research has demonstrated that the basic elements of good—nutrition, exercise, not abusing substances, stress reduction—are important for preventing disease. You’ll live much longer and happier than someone without good habits. Here are a few of the health problems whose risks can be lowered by healthful habits:

  • Cardiovascular issues such as heart attacks and strokes (the numbers one and three causes of death)
  • Some cancers
  • Diabetes (currently reaching epidemic proportions)
  • Lung diseases related to smoking
  • Injuries related to substance abuse

Wellness is more than just avoiding disease.

Wellness involves feeling good in every respect, in mind and spirit as well as in body. Good health habits also offer these benefits for your college career:

  • More energy
  • Better ability to focus on your studies
  • Less stress, feeling more resilient and able to handle day-to-day stress
  • Less time lost to colds, flu, infections, and other illnesses
  • More restful sleep

This chapter examines a wide range of topics, from nutrition, exercise, and sleep to substance abuse and risks related to sexual activity. All of these involve personal attitudes and behaviors. Additionally, they are all linked together to one of the biggest problems students face: stress.

Everyone knows about stress, but not everyone knows how to control it. Stress is the great enemy of college success. But once you’ve learned how to reduce it where you can and cope with unavoidable stress, you’ll be well on the road to becoming the best student you can be.

The development of an experimental methodology using PsychoPy

Experimental methodology: practical assignment
In this assignment, you are going to create a mini-experiment, using PsychoPy, in order to test the speed of verification for prototypical and non-prototypical members of categories. The experiment involves a verification task in which participants are presented with the name of a category followed by a noun, and their task is to verify whether the subsequent noun is a member of the mentioned category.1 Follow these steps:

1. Firstly, choose three categories e.g. VEHICLE and list all the defining features (You can consult a dictionary if you need to).

2. Secondly, list as many members as you can for each category.

3. Thirdly, choose three prototypical members (members that have the highest number of features listed in he first step) and three non-prototypical members (members that have the least number of features).2 You should now have 3 category names with 6 items in each, a total of 18 items.

4. Fourthly, open an excel sheet, enter the word “stimuli” in the first row of the first column, and fill in the rest of the rows in the same column with your experimental items in the following format: CATEGORYNAME:MEMBER, e.g. vehicle:tractor

The development of an experimental methodology using PsychoPy

5. Next, add all the members of each category to the names of the two other categories. For example, if you have a second category FRUIT, with members such as apple, create combinations such as the following: vehicle:apple and fruit:tractor. The goal is to have all possible combinations in order to compare them with our desired manipulation. You should now have 36 extra combinations in addition to the original 18 experimental items.

6. Then, in the second column of the excel sheet, enter the word “CorrAns” in order to specify the correct answer for the computer to know in advance. This way, the computer can compare participants’ responses against these correct answers. Here you need to enter the correct keys (on the keyboard) that are used by participants in the experiment. Also, If we take the right arrow for YES and the left arrow for NO answers, you need to enter ‘right’ in front of the items that are congruent (vehicle:tractor) and enter ‘left’ in front of the items that are incongruent (vehicle:apple).

7. Save the excel file and exit.

8. Open psychopy.

9. Change the background of the monitor from ‘Experiment settings’ at the top. Enter [1,1,1] for color, under ‘Screen’ tab in order to set the background to white.

10. Insert a new routine for the instructions.

11. Subsequently, enter a text component and specify the parameters.

12. Finally, remove the time pressure to allow the participant to read the instructions.
