She is also concerned about Teagan’s use of cannabis. Amita claims that Teagan’s responses to small indiscretions are extreme and that she is quick to make judgements about people or situations with little information.

Recently, Teagan decided that a friend of Amita’s wasn’t allowed to come to their house because she had made some ‘throwaway’ comments about their dog. Amita says Teagan does this often, liking people quickly for frivolous reasons, and disliking others for similar reasons. Teagan has been cutting herself since she was 13 years old. She finds it difficult to articulate why she does it, only that she gets relief from cutting. On a few occasions she has contemplated suicide, and many more times she has threatened it. Amita finds this aspect of their relationship very difficult to deal with and frequently feels as though Teagan’s threats to self-harm or suicide are a way of manipulating her.

You will be responsible for writing a Research Paper focusing on a social psychology topic of your choosing. The topic must be one that is discussed in the textbook. For your paper, you must thoroughly review and cite 2 peer-reviewed journal articles that demonstrate research regarding your topic. Your articles must present original research studies (e.g., correlational or experimental) in which the authors of the article actually formed hypotheses, collected/analyzed data, and compiled results themselves. Theoretical/review articles and meta-analyses are not necessary for this paper.

Some examples include (please note you do not need to choose one of these topics):

1. For a paper on the Bystander Effect, you could find an article in which the authors manipulated the number of people present and measured helping behavior.

The protection of human subjects is a primary concern regarding ethics in research. Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are committees that are convening to ensure the protection of human subjects from physical or psychological harm. IRB members task with formal protocol reviews in which they assess the ethics of potential research studies and their methods to maximize the safety of participants and to promote fully informative and voluntary participation. Historically, IRB procedures for protocol reviews were developing in response to abuses in research studies such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study or the infamous Doctors Trial.
