Innovation Management

You are asked to read the HBS case: Bank of America (A)—Stefan Thomke, 2003, Harvard Business School Press, Case 603-022. You will then use the following questions to prepare your answers to the Bank of America (A) case. You should also draw on the information provided by the “Innovation: The Other Side, Making Innovation Happen” especially the associated online lecture and the notes. You MUST provide reasoning, i.e., do not just say ‘X’ in one word! Reason why ‘X’. However, you MUST be analytical and concise as a manager would! Case Questions: 1. What is the Bank of America’s (BoA) “innovation & development market” in terms of purpose? 2. What are your observations on process, organization, management, and culture to do with BoA’s “innovation & development market”? How does the “innovation & development market” compare the model of innovation management that is summarized by the ““Innovation: The Other Side, Making Innovation Happen”, as well as the points covered in the slides using the following questions. 3. Briefly list the three parts to an innovation management covered in lecture slides? 4. Discuss BoA’s Innovation Management approach along the following lines: 4a. Does “innovation & development market” fit with the “lecture slides” model of having an assigned dedicated team for innovation? Why/Why Not? How? 4b. Does “innovation & development market” fit with the “lecture slides” model of having partnership between the innovation team and core business? Why/Why Not? How? 4c. Does “innovation & development market” fit with the “lecture slides” model of having experiments as the primary means of producing workable innovation? Why/Why Not? How? 5. What does it mean to “test” a service innovation? What is involved in doing so that is different from a product? What is the impact on doing innovation? 6. Should BoA just hire outside companies (like IDEO or Continum) to develop new innovative services for them? 7. What constitutes an experiment in services in the context of BoA or any other bank? 8. What is the experience of BoA with “innovation & development market” so far? 9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the “innovation & development market” currently? Why? 10. What grade (A, B, C, D, …) would you give Bank of America in doing “innovation & development market”? Why? 11. The BoA’s “innovation & development market” team is facing decision(s) at the end of the case (A): enumerate these decisions (their key variables/parameters) and offer how you would proceed to tackle this decision(s)? Be advised that we use Turnitin software which detects text similarity across submissions very accurately (from past classes or internet, or from colleagues, etc.) • You must also include the exact question wording from the text of the assignment (above) in your response and also list your answers to each question immediately after it (I will provide this electronically through email for this purpose so you do not have to re-type it!). • The text of your case report assignment, exclusive of cover page and figures and tables (not asking for these) should not exceed 4 pages, single-spaced/doubles-spaced (up to you), typeface point 12, 2.5 cm margin on all sides.

Risk–benefit analysis

A risk–benefit analysis is fairly easy to understand in theory, but fairly difficult to conduct in practice. Conduct a risk–benefit analysis on each of the following experiment proposals. Assume that you are responsible for deciding whether or not to approve each experiment.

You must justify each decision as well as suggest ways to improve each proposal. Mickey wants to study how food deprivation affects learning in mice. He believes that animals have a survival instinct to learn more quickly when food is scarce. He proposes an experiment in which mice are given only water for 1, 2, 5, or 10 days. He then plans to measure the speed with which they learn to navigate a complicated maze. Barbara believes that people will shift from using paper towels to using electric air dryers in public restrooms if they are told about the amount of paper waste in landfills. She proposes a study in which a sign is posted in some bathrooms explaining the pollution problem, but is not posted in other bathrooms. She will use hidden video cameras to record people’s use of either the paper towel dispenser or the electric air dryer in each of the two bathroom conditions.

Lucy believes that our self-image affects how we rate the appearance of others. She proposes an experiment in which participants rate the attractiveness of various models. Unbeknownst to the participants, a confederate will be loitering in the hallway outside the experiment room. As volunteers arrive for the experiment, the confederate will either compliment (“You look nice in that outfit.”) or insult (“That outfit makes you look fat.”) the participant. Lucy will then compare the model ratings from complimented and insulted participants.

This paper should be two to three pages in length, double-spaced, and written in proper APA format. In addition to the minimum page count (i.e., two pages and one line, minimum), you should also include a cover page and a reference page in APA format. Also use a minimum of one additional source (in addition to your textbook) to support your point

Harold Meyerson How to Raise Americans’ Wages

p. 424 Harold Meyerson, “How to Raise Americans’ Wages” Read RCWW p. 424 Harold Meyerson, “How to Raise Americans’ Wages” and then respond to questions that annotate the article in the margins. Why is the dis-connect between productivity and compensation a problem? How well do rhetorical questions work here? How effectively does Meyerson refute alternative views of the problem? Why do you think Meyerson repeats this idea about “design”? What strategies does Meyerson use to help readers follow this multi-part proposal? How does Meyerson support his argument that this solution is feasible? How does Meyerson handle objections to this solution? Why is “choice” likely to strengthen this solution? How convincing are the sources in pars. 10, 12, 14, and 15? What makes them Convincing (or not)? How clearly does Meyerson explain the difference between capital income and wages? How effectively does Meyerson refute alternative views in this paragraph?

SCARCITY TRADE-OFF MINDSET OF ENTREPRENEURS IN THE FIELD OF EMERGING CONTEMPORARY ART MARKETS

Description

Use the concept of “scarcity mind-set” (introduced by Mullainathan & Eldar in 2013) and apply it in the field of art business. In their book the looked at what happens to our minds when we feel we have too little? How does the context of scarcity shape our choices and our behaviors? They show that scarcity is not just a physical limitation. Scarcity affects our thinking and feeling. Scarcity orients the mind automatically and powerfully toward unfulfilled needs. I want to apply this theory to the contemporary art galleries, where entrepreneurs (people who open up the gallery) also usually have limited access to the resources. My focus specifically is on the emerging contemporary art galleries in London (in Mayfair specifically). Usually these entrepreneurs have artistic vision, rather than business vision. I want to approach gallery owners as entrepreneurs. When opening the gallery, they face a lot of challenges, and must make key decisions critical to the success of business. They also have to find compromise (trade offs). Generally in my dissertation I want to find out more about the trade – offs, which gallery owners had to make, when they were in the process of opening the gallery i.e. no access to resources; decisions within limited amount of time. I want to interview several gallery owners and ask them about there challenges i.e. how would they compete with top-levels galleries + mega galleries, who already have deep pockets and/or multiple international locations. How would emerging contemporary gallery manage its relations with collectors & museums? Finally, what are the strategies for overcoming these challenges i.e. is there a “recipe” for the best business model, which can be used by young art entrepreneurs, who want to open up gallery. What is more, I want to find out more about key decisions, which they had to make when they were just opening i.e. do they want to represent local artists or international? What were their plans about growth and even international expansion? Would they like to participate in art fairs & biennials? Would they have their gallery at a permanent specific location or will it be temporary space (pop-up/ mobile gallery)?
