For this assignment you will use two materials, the article “Orientalizing New Spain” and a sample of an art collection. Both materials are already available in PDF format.

The Franz Mayer Museum, located in Mexico City, is renowned for its collection of early modern objects that were produced locally or abroad. As products of material culture, these objects of art illustrate cultural development of the society where they were produced.

Before looking at the art collection, read the article entirely. Then proceed to see each object and read its description. I chose the sample of 17 objects you will analyze for this assignment. See below for the reference. Some objects have more than one photo. Further, Be careful to read each description to see the place of origin of the object, how they arrived in Spanish America (if produced abroad), and what kind of artistic patterns they have. Refer to the number of the object when citing or making examples.

When looking at these objects of the collection, I encourage you to think how they “visually” show the cultural connections among the various continents in the early modern period.

Then answer the following question:

Many objects of quotidian use in Spanish America had artistic elements or patterns that confirmed cultural (artistic, commercial, political, etc.) influences from the Old World. How does the collection of the Franz Mayer Museum illustrate the beginnings of the globalization process in early modern times? Provide support from both the reading and the art collection sample. DO NOT USE any additional sources.
