ENGL 2327 EXAM 2
Do not use any outside research material whatsoever in completing this exam. Use only the texts we have read, our class discussions, and your own ideas and interpretations.

PART ONE: Short-Answer portion. In two of the following excerpts briefly discuss their meaning and significance. Do not summarize the entire work unless summary is necessary to make your point about meaning/significance. (25 each/50 possible)

1. We are a people of cultivators, scattered over an immense territory communicating with each other by means of good roads and navigable rivers, united by the silken bands of mild government, all respecting the laws, without dreading their power, because they are equitable. We are all animated with the spirit of an industry which is unfettered and unrestrained, because each person works for himself.

2. Men are like plants; the goodness and flavour of the fruit proceeds from the peculiar soil and exposition in which they grow. We are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the climate we inhabit, the government we obey, the system of religion we profess, and the nature of our employment.

Part 2 (50 points):

This is the essay portion. Write on the following prompt.
Your response should be clear and focused, in essay form.
You should have an introductory paragraph and a thesis statement of your overall response. Also, you should include body paragraphs that explain and support your position. Lastly, you must use at least two direct, specific references to relevant texts.

1. Compare the main characters in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” — Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane to Crevecouer’s ideas about what constitutes a real American. Which of the two men do you think Crevecouer would recognize as more a “real” American, who deserves Katrina’s wealth? Is this still, now, how we think of what a “real American” is? Please be specific in your discussion.
