Secondly, listen to two made during the past from two prominent leaders. The prominent leaders are Kennedy and Reagan. As you listen, pay careful attention to how they make use of the “city upon a hill” phrase in their speeches.

In addition to these two speeches, Puritan leader John Winthrop’s provided his description of the same. His description of American as a “city upon a hill” contributed to the idea of American exceptionalism. Lastly, based on the speeches of each, how do you think they interpret the phrase or statement? Moreover, are their interpretations similar to or different from Winthrop’s interpretation?

Additionally, consider also that Kennedy used the phrase when entering office and Reagan used the phrase as a farewell‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ when leaving office.
