E‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ach student will choose content produced in the region and write an analytical paper. To complete this assignment, each student needs to develop a an outline and a research paper (approximately 2000 words). The outline is worth 5% and the complete paper is worth 15% of the overall grade.  Your objective is to:

1. Firstly, contextualize the show within the channel, network, or platform. Using secondary sources, you will identify and analyze approaches associated with the development, production and distribution strategies.

2. Secondly, describe the show (its genre, its storytelling methods, use of cultural “signs,” entertainment/dramatic/informative techniques, its typical topics, plots and/or situations, its ideological meaning etc.). You should closely analyze one or two episodes in detail to gather information for this part of your paper.

3. Thirdly, compare it with other shows in the same genre throughout the history of Arab television (or global television) to give your analysis some context. For this section, you will use your research and class readings.

4. Fourthly, explain how different historical periods and contexts might account for differences between earlier, similar shows, and this one.

5. Then, determine the show’s popularity (ratings, media reports etc.).

6. Lastly, explain the reasons for its popularity (its audience, its timely themes, artistic excellence, etc.) Or explain why it is not succeeding.

Here is how to proceed.

1. Firstly read about some of the new shows, watch some of them and choose one. 2. Programs can be selected from variou‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍s sources including but not restricted to local television, Arab satellite television channels, or streaming platforms. Non-Arabic speaking students are encouraged to seek subtitled programs commonly available on streaming platforms. Use the tools you are learning in class. 3. Then watch the show. Take notes, and begin to collect examples from the episodes of the show to use in your description and analysis.

4. Visit the web site of the show if there is one. Also read up on the show and its cast. Find and also read reviews of the show. Avoid “fan” reviews. Stick to reviews by professionals in newspapers and magazines. 5. Figure out who the target audience for the show is. Check the commercials or descriptions to re-confirm your assumptions about the audience the show’s producers are trying to attract. 6. Based on the readings, analyze why the show is doing well or poorly.  Is it fresh and different, or is it clichéd and unimaginative?

7. This is the most important — lastly, identify the show’s place in television history by comparing it with significant shows from TV’s past that are similar to it, similar in genre, style, characters, situations, themes, issue-orientations, etc.  Cite evidence from the readings, use quotes to establish the nature of shows like yours from the past, cite specific examples.  Then draw your comparisons. Your paper will be assessed for its communication skills and sophistication of thought. Of particular importance is the degree to which you use the class materials as a framework and also foundation for your‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ analysis of this TV program.
