Surveillance in George Orwell’s 1984

This is for an english class. Needs to be 7 pages. This is a research paper that requires at least 5 secondary sources, dealing with George Orwell’s 1984. Of the secondary sources, at least one of these must be a relevant journal article. Some texts will have more written on them than others, so some research may deal more with the theoretical framework or issues raised by the work. Students are encouraged to use databases such as Project MUSE and JSTOR for relevant literary journals. Typically, the hierarchical authority of sources is: journal article, book chapter, monograph, thesis manuscript, newspapers & magazines, Internet article. Internet sources (one allowed) may be used ONLY if the source has its own bibliography. Google, Wikipedia, LION and The John’s Hopkins Guide are good places for getting started thinking about these topics (and authors) but may not be included as one of the sources. Critical theory readers might also be useful for defining terms and finding sources. MLA Bibliography format, please. Papers are graded based on coherence and originality of your argument, the effectiveness of the structure, use of primary quotations and secondary citations in conveying your idea, and the quality of the paper’s prose, grammar and punctuation. Substantial knowledge of the text and frequent use of textual examples is assumed. The paper topics listed below should be considered “jumping off points” rather than prescriptive theses. DANGERS OF TECHNOLOGY. Our initial optimism concerning new technologies and media (and old ones) often end up being tempered by the hazards of their use (or misuse). Often this is tied up with issues of power or authority. What is the text trying to warn us about regarding the use (and abuse) of technology? The more original the thesis the better. Include page number in the top left. Also have to put student name, profs name and course code and date in the top right of the first page using MLA format. Also make a title that reflects what will be talked about if possible (MLA format).
