TEAM ESSAY ASSIGNMENT: SAP TRAINING
Please work in your team to write an essay response to the following questions. Each member should contribute by answering one of the questions. The team as a whole should evaluate and agree upon the answer as a whole before submitting it.
Figure 1. Schematic of The Three Levels and Four Major Types of a Management Information System
In this week, our class completed two training activities involving the use of the SAP enterprise resource planning system (ERP). The first activity was design ed to give you a sense for how the use of an ERP can help an organization manage its order-to-cash cycle. The second was designed to give you a sense for how the use of an ERP can help an organization integrate data from numerous ERP modules (e.g., the production module. The inventory module; the logistics module. The finance and accounting modules) to inform decisions regarding how to price a product in a way that reconciles expected demand with the use of resources. (E.g., production, inventory, shipping) needed to supply that demand.
The Soules COB requires students to complete these and similar SAP activities in other courses in response to industry requests to help students enter the job market with a threshold level of awareness and skill regarding the use of the SAP system. Industry understands that organizations customize their particular installation of the SAP system. Such that the interface that you observed and navigated in this week’s training activities may bear scant resemblance to the SAP interface that you may encounter on the job. Still, some level of awareness and skill regarding the use of the SAP system is better than none. Here’s why.
The SAP system is so complex, and its use is so particularized, that many operators could not make effective use of it without the ongoing, widespread.
Also, expensive reliance on consulting companies, such as the 79 (!) listed here. That these operators persist in this practice confirms the high barriers to exit from the use of the SAP system. This dilemma demonstrates why many universities provide some measure of SAP training: Employers reason that they can make more-effective and less-costly use of their SAP installation if incoming employees have at least a clue about how to use the SAP system.
Please reflect on your experience of completing the two SAP activities in our class. Also, your experience of completing similar SAP activities in other management and marketing classes. If your experience is similar to that of the 150 or so students whom I’ve surveyed on this matter. You may conclude these SAP activities provide only the bare minimum awareness of the complexity of the SAP system. Also, Ask yourself this question. Am I confident that, compared to a rival job candidate who has not navigated the SAP activities that I have navigated in my courses. I can credibly claim to be ready on Day One of a new job to make effective use of an ERP, such as the SAP system?
Question for Team Member # 1: Clarify the Problem
Please explain (minimum 100 words) whether the situation described above indicates the need for a different model of SAP training. Perhaps one whose design would be influenced by industry’s rush to work-at-home models of distributed work. Alos, business schools’ rush to study-at-home models of distributed study. Please also inform your answer by considering the study-at-home experience that your teammates and you had when completing our SAP assignments (especially the water game assignment), which required some form of synchronous or asynchronous collaboration.

Question for Team Member # 2: Ideate the Solution
Please describe (minimum 100 words) the outline of a solution to the problem that team member # 1 stated. You may wish to consider the design of the training and whether the provider of the training would be a university. One or more of the many companies currently providing SAP consulting support services, or a new company.
