The Borderlands of Slavery in Medieval Mediterranean France

Paper by Daniel Lord Smail

Given at the joint conference of the 66th Society for French Historical Studies Conference
and the 22nd George Rudé Seminar in French History and Civilisation, on July 8, 2020

Excerpt: I’m currently writing a book on slavery in the Provence in the 14th and 15th centuries and I’ll be presenting some of those findings in the in the final section of this paper. Given the audience however, what I to do for this paper was to see how this work might fit into the broader currents of the French historiography of slavery. So I’ve been spending the last couple of months working through the really interesting literature that’s been emerging for the ancien régime of the modern period just to learn about the subject and, as the Colbert controversy has shown, the subject has been hopping up lately.

Daniel Lord Smail is Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of History at Harvard University, where he works on the history and anthropology of Mediterranean societies between 1100 and 1600.
