Film analysis – Slumdog Millionaire

The goal of this assignment is to see how topics we read in class appear in media.

Slumdog Millionaire is a movie that was released about 10 years ago. According to Wikipedia, “it was nominated for ten Academy Awards in 2009 and won eight—the most for any 2008 film—including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won seven BAFTA Awards including Best Film, five Critics’ Choice Awards and four Golden Globes.” Your assignment is to watch the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and identify 3 topics that were covered in class to date (basic sociology terms; modern slavery; gender, ethnic, religious discrimination; etc. ). Tip: As you watch the movie, keep something nearby for writing notes so that you can reference the examples or go back to that place in the movie to write a full description. For each of the 3 topics:

1. Write a summary of the topic as described in the textbook or class materials (200-300 words).

2. Describe the specific example in the movie that relates to the topic (200-300 words).

3. Write about how you see that example relating to the course topic (150-250 words).

You will need to reference the chapter, video, or reading that the course topic information came from, but you don’t need to cite any other outside sources.

The topic we have cover Chapter 1 Sociological Imagination Conflict Theory/Paradigm Structural-Functional theory/Paradigm Private Troubles vs. Social Problems Durkheim and Suicide, Solidarity Manifest and Latent Functions Life Chances Human Development Index The Great Divergence World Systems Theory Chapter 2 GINI Human Development Index Colonialism Modern Slavery Chapter 6 Race and inequality Ethnicity and inequality Religion and inequality Islam: Sacred Texts and Five Pillars Chapter 7 Gender and inequality Intersectionality Transgender inequality Global Gender Differences (from the blackboard readings).
