Critical essay: fiction

Description

As we’ve discovered, many of the stories on our syllabus create characters and dramatize subject matter–graphic violence, sexual pathology, Satanism, racism, necrophilia–that would be considered obscene, in the classical sense of the term.

In your view, is there any story so “Obscene” that it should be banned from our “iconic” canon?

In your analysis, you should make  your definition of “obscene” clear; from that basis, you can determine whether the author’s raw material is so gratuitous and/or inappropriate that it detracts from, or even overwhelms, the story’s best intentions. Obviously, if you believe that none of the works is obscene, you should demonstrate why a story of your choice ultimately succeeds despite, or perhaps because of, its disturbing details.

Once again, your essay should be four to six pages, and contain four secondary sources, smoothly integrated into your text and properly documented. Meyer’s chapters 50 and 51, which we will review, are particularly helpful for this assignment.
