Description In his review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated, the famed film critic Roger Ebert wrote: “After seeing This Film Is Not Yet Rated, you may find yourself thinking a government censorship board… isn’t such a bad idea.” What are the pros and cons of the MPAA’s present regulatory system versus a film rating system that might be overseen by the government to some degree? Please base your discussion at least in part on the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, applicable assigned readings, and lecture materials. You may assume that any system of governmental regulation would be required to follow the procedural safeguards outlined by the Supreme Court in the Freedman v. Maryland (1965) case discussed in class.
Relatedly, what are some recommendations you would provide for improving the MPAA’s current rating system? Finally, would a movie like This Film Is Not Yet Rated be treated any differently under your new and improved system than it was handled by the MPAA? What rating would your system give it and why?
