In more recent years, the American Counseling Association (ACA) has recognized that professional counselors, like all helping professions, are at a higher risk for burnout, vicarious trauma, and impairment. The purpose of the Counselor Impairment and Wellness Paper is for you to be able to objectively explain issues that arise from being a professional counselor and also how to mitigate those through personal wellness and self-care strategies.

In addition to the textbook reading and chapter video, visit the American Counseling Association website (https://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/vistas) and it’s journal, VISTAS, and read the following articles:

Ahia, C.E. & Boccone, P.J. (2017). Licensure board actions against professional counselors: Implicationsfor counselor training. VISTAS. Retrieved from https://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/vistas.

Write a 6 page paper, making sure to properly cite within your paper all sources you consult for information in current APA format. Additionally, our paper must be in current APA format (including a running head, title page, abstract, and reference page). The abstract must provide a brief, but detailed, overview of the paper in 150–250 words. The title page, abstract, and reference page do not contribute toward the page requirement.

Definition of Impairment (this should include a discussion of how and why counselors become impaired, what that impairment looks like, and also how it can impact the practice of counseling). This section should be 2 pages long.

Implications of Impairment (this should include a discussion of ethical misconduct, specifically noting the most frequently occurring ethical violations in your state [the article will give some guidance but you are also strongly encouraged to research this on your state’s counseling board website]). This section should be 1 page long.

Impairment Prevention (this should include a discussion of what can counselors do to protect against impairment). This section should be 1 page long.

Wellness Plan and Reflection (while the other sections need to be written in 3rd person, this section can be written in 1st person). You will assess your own risks and develop a personal wellness plan. This section should be 2 pages long. Begin by taking the following assessments:

Stress Reactions Inventory

Self-Care Assessment, Self-Care Life Pie Worksheet, and Self-Care Social Support Worksheet.

Firstly, discuss the results of the assessments and in what ways you see your results reflecting your current life.

Secondly, develop a Wellness Plan as a result of your assessments. Include reflections of the following question:

Thirdly, what areas of your life need more or less attention?

Fourthly, what changes do you need to make?

Also, what steps are you willing to take to reach your goal of implementing needed changes?

What social factors have given rise to the so-called epidemic of depression

What social factors have given rise to the so-called ‘epidemic’ of depression?

You will need to show your understanding of the social construction of ‘depression’ as a category of suffering (i.e. changes in formal definitions of depression), and the social, cultural, and economic conditions that may have contributed to increased rates of depression. Use statistics early in your essay as ‘evidence’ that there is something of an ‘epidemic’ (or you may reject this argument, based on evidence). EXPLANATION OF GRADING CRITERIA Structure – 10% Essay organisation and structure supports the logical development of a discussion or argument (includes clear, purposeful introduction and conclusion, and clearly organised paragraphs of approximately 150-200-words) An essay should be coherent, that is there should be a degree of integration or ‘flow’ running through the ideas you present. Coherence is supported by sound sentence and paragraph construction. An essay is organised in 3 parts: • An introduction introduces the social ‘problem’/question/issue and how you plan to discuss it sociologically. You might include the following elements: I. Introduce the question/problem/issue II. State the areas that you want to focus on III. Indicate your ‘frame/s’ (the concepts/perspectives that inform the essay and help to analyse the content), if applicable IV. Indicate the organisation of the essay – how you go about ordering the discussion or argument V. Indicate the general conclusion • The main body in which you develop discussion/argument, and • The conclusion where you sum up the essay’s discussion and draw conclusions (note that a conclusion is not a repeat of the introduction).   Content – 70% 1. Discipline-specific skills – 50% Essay addresses the topic sociologically, and demonstrates a clear understanding of key sociological concepts appropriate to the chosen topic (i.e. focuses on “the social”, not the biological or the psychological realms) You will need to use sociological language and ideas in your essay — remember that this essay is focusing on ‘the social’ – it is not focused on symptoms and medical explanations (though these might be mentioned) *** Examples of sociological explanations – see Sandell & Bornas (neoliberal subjectivity – social environment shapes selfhood); Eckersley’s discussion of cultural change > qualitatively different pressures on younger generation because of social, economic and cultural changes >>> contributes to increased rates of mental health problems 2. Critical thinking – 10% Essay engages with rather than simply re-states ideas and arguments in the reading Expectations: • Evidence is appropriate • Reasoning is coherent • (Where applicable) the essay questions assumptions of others 3. Inquiry/research – 10% Essay shows adequate use of relevant research material
