It is used by organizations to compare their performance against peers and competitors on a range of benchmarks over various periods of time. The link for the site is: (http://www.whynotthebest.org/) o Select a minimum of 3 hospitals (from the left menu box – “Compare Hospitals”) in your home state and at 3 hospitals in least 2-3 other states in order to make comparisons. It is recommended that your choice of the other 2-3 states be states that have similar characteristics (i.e. demographics or population) as your home state. Your selections are not required to be neighboring states. o Once the list appears based on your selected state (under the matching hospitals menu), click on the arrow icon next to the hospital to add them to the box on the right (“add to report”). Do not leave this page until all of your hospitals and states have been selected. Your choices will not be saved. Look back to the left menu box and select your next state and hospitals until all of your choices have been selected. o Once all selections have been made, click on “View Report.” You must click on the site terms of agreement in order to proceed. You will also need to give your report a name. Any name will suffice. Click on “View Report” again. You may get a popup menu that asks again for the agreement to the terms of use. Please read this information. It also illustrates how to cite your report. You will need this citation information for the reference page of your report. o Your report will be displayed. Click on the “change category” link in order to produce reports on the following characteristics. Patient Experience Mortality Rates Readmission Rates Health Information Technology o It is recommended that you print the chart reports from each category. If you desire, you can create a free account to save your reports. However, if you do not create the account before you do the report, you will lose your report. It may be more feasible just to print out your reports. 22 o If you select hospitals that do not have enough to measure the four required characteristics, it is advised that you select other hospitals. The purpose of the assignment is to compare facilities. o After reviewing the reports from each state, students will develop a comparative analysis paper. The paper will explore the four (4) required areas of comparison; describe the findings, and present ideas for improving the data findings. o Requirements: The body of the paper should be between a minimum of 8 p 11/23/2019 Writers Hub – Freelance Writing https://www.writershub.org/writer/orders/506651#instructions 6/8 not to exceed 12 pages (3500-4000 words), typed and double-spaced in Times Roman font using APA standard. White Collar Crime and Organized Crime research articles

1. Summarize each article in 450 words or more —meaning, no less than 450 words per article summary (summary titles & reference information is not included in the 450-word requirement). You will NOT receive partial credit for partial work. Partial work is a failed requirement. You get zero credit for failed requirements. 2. Each summary should include a discussion of the goal of the article (what the researchers were trying to do find – what are the article hypotheses?), the literature review (past research), the research methods (the steps taken to conduct the research study –data, population, sampling type, statistical techniques – ANOVA, ANCOVA, Logistic regression, etc.), the results (what they found), and the discussion/conclusions of the research article (were the findings consistent with the hypotheses?, why what they found is important to the particular field of study, etc.). It is tremendously important to discuss the policy implications/directions for future research/limitations of each article. It is recommended that you outline each article with all of the components you are responsible for providing (see page 3). 3. All pertinent Journal, Article, & Author information (article title, author name(s), journal name, date, journal volume #, issue #, page #s) must be provided in the REFERENCE page. 4. Each article summary should be well written and in NO way mirror the abstract. This WILL result in severe penalties. In other words, paraphrase—read the article and summarize the information using your own words, do not just copy and paste. 5. Do NOT use any quotes—you must paraphrase the information from each article (use your own words). If you use quotes (even if they are properly cited) you will be severely penalized. 6. You will only need ONE cover page for the entire assignment, with your name, the class name, and the date. 1 7. Each subsequent research article summary should be separated from the last by using the “Insert” and “Page Break” feature provided by your word processor (“Insert” function using Microsoft Word). 8. A “peer reviewed” journal article is not a magazine article. Do NOT get the two confused. A general rule of thumb is that peer-reviewed academic journal articles are usually over 10 pages in length, they do not have pictures/ads (aside from tables), and they all start with an “abstract.” 9. You need to provide a cover page and only use: (a) double-spacing, (b) Times New Roman font, (c) 12 font size, and (d) 1” margins. 10. APA Format is required. 11. I will NOT accept any paper that exceeds 20% replication (this is essentially reserved for references). Be absolutely sure you are paraphrasing. 12. I do NOT want to know your opinion on the research article summaries. This is a research project, not an opinion piece. You will be penalized 25 points on every article that includes your opinion. 13. You are required to submit your paper in WORD (or a word processor) format. Do NOT submit your paper in PDF (or any other non-WORD) format. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a 25-point penalty. 14. There will be a 25-point penalty if you submit the incorrect file. Make sure you are submitting your final product. 15. If you need an extension on your research paper, you must request a research paper extension. There is a 10-point daily penalty for late research papers (2 days maximum). Receiving a research paper extension does NOT preclude a research paper from being penalized, it is simply giving you permission to submit a late paper. If a student does NOT request and/or receive a research paper extension, and they subsequently submit a late research paper, that research paper will NOT be graded, and the student will earn a failing grade. A research paper extension request must be in writing (email will suffice). Being granted a research paper extension request must also be in writing.

Appropriate and inappropriate behavior that we can judge from the outside

Aristotle stressed that virtues led to excellence in human behaviour.

This implies that there is appropriate and inappropriate behaviour that we can judge from the outside, as part of the social context. But implicit in this idea is the perspective that we can understand what life calls for (a sense of purpose), that change is progressive, and that most experiences can be predicted. Do you think that everyday life has a purpose? If so, what is that purpose and how do you know it? If not, what guides your sense of excellence, of better rather than worse in human behaviour? In either case, what do you think are the indicators of virtue that suggest a person is excellent (or on their way to excellence)? Quotation and or paraphrase with explanation from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics is required for students seeking a top grade.

Criminal Injustice today in America

This project will allow you to exhibit your mastery of the information learned in the class and explore a topic of interest in more depth. While you can build on work that you have already completed in the class, these assignments should contain original content (i.e. no copy and pastes of earlier papers/work/etc.). This paper should bring new information to light and not be a summary or repetitive discussion of what we’ve learned/discussed in class. Complete a traditional research paper on a topic that you would consider a “criminal injustice” in today’s American criminal justice system. The topic should be something that is currently affecting policing, courts, and/or corrections and could be considered “unjust.” The two books we’ve read in class No Place on the Corner and Punishment Without Crimeare two examples of criminal injustice (from the perspective of the authors). The first author claimed that the use of stop-and-frisk is unjust based on racial and social inequality. The second author claimed that the overcharging of misdemeanors unfairly disadvantage certain groups and lead to more economic and social inequality. (You may not use either of these topics for this paper because we have already discussed them in class. However, they are examples that can help you as your brainstorm.) The paper should be 1,500 –2,000 words (approximately 6-8 pages) with 1-inch margins all the way around, written in Times New Roman 12 point font. Again, no information from the previous assignments in this class or others should be cut and pasted into this paper. All work needs to be original. (Note: This paper is essentially a review of the literature on a given topic, which you will use to formulate your own argument. You do not need to collect your own data in the form of surveys, experiments, etc.) Your paper should include the following: A clear introduction with a strong thesis statement A section outlining your topic and why it could be considered an injustice. o This should focus on issues of inequality that might stem from race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc. This is where the sociological reasoning should be clear. Clear information on how this issue is related to today’s criminal justice system in America. The paper is not about crime generally. It’s about the criminal justice system (policing, courts, and/or corrections). Two to three clear and identifiable main points that are well-supported. A discussion of the impact this issue has on society and/or specific groups in society. A clear conclusion that wraps up your main ideas. All papers will be graded on the following: Quality of information and discussion;  Originality of information and discussion; Relationship to the class and focus on the American criminal justice system; Sociological approach;  Effectiveuse of at least five scholarly resources from outside the class, which are correctly cited in-text and included in a reference page using APA or ASA citation; Grammar and overall quality of work.
