Argumentative Essay on a question that has been analysed and discussed in class

Task: You are required to write an Argumentative Essay on a question that has been analysed and discussed in class during the study period. This question will be agreed and decided upon in the last class of the course.

Your essay should be approximately 2,000 words. A 10% allowance (both above and below the 2,000 word limit) is provided to acknowledge differences in individual writing styles. The inclusion of in-text references are included in this word count. The reference list is not included in the word count.

Purpose: The purpose of an Argumentative Essay is to defend a debatable position on a particular issue with the ultimate goal of persuading readers to accept the argument.
Although the goal is to convince readers to accept the argument, the readers’ response will either be: agree completely, agree with reservations, or disagree.

Analysis: In order to achieve high marks it is necessary to undertake wide research that allows you to support any assertions made. The outputs of this research must be contained within a clear logical construction of the story that leads to an inescapable conclusion.

Structure: As with all essays there must be

i. an introduction that clearly sets out the theme being investigated as well as the limits of the submission

ii. A body where the analysis of the question is undertaken

iii. A conclusion that clearly and logically summarises the findings, without just restating what has already be stated
As with any essay, the use of headings is inappropriate. All sections of the essay must flow seamlessly from one to the next.
Writing guidance: Where students require further guidance on essay writing, the library has a number of excellent books and articles on the topic. One online version you may wish to investigate is:

Resources: It is expected that students will perform a significant and extensive amount of research. This research will ultimately be reflected in the quality and insight of the written document.

The library provides very useful resources for undertaking this research.

Submission must occur via the LearnOnline link no later than the due date, as shown in both the Course Outline and the submission link itself. As such, please consider the deadline stated as strict.
