Paper details:

Here is the description of the assignment Paper (60%)

Students are expected to state the title of the paper and develop the content individually.

The paper should compose of two parts, the content and reflection. In the content part, the student provides a theoretical discourse of the issues related to advanced nursing practice learned in the lectures and tutorial presentation, with illustration of clinical scenarios / cases as appropriate. In the reflection part, the student reflects on the issues raised in the first part, made observations or suggestions related to their own area of specialty practice. The students should substantiate discussion with references in the paper showing that they are conversant with the topic in a scholarly manner.

There is no word limit. A reasonable length of the paper would be around 3000 to 5000 words. As I am working in a geriatrics ward in Hong Kong, I would like to stick to my specialty and talk about the role of our nurse in-charge (APN) making use of advanced skills teaching DM patients and their relatives in pen-prefilled-insulin injection, medications and diet adherence. Please kindly state the importance of having ‘advanced’ knowledge, experience and skills and make use of nursing models to illustrate the methods and techniques APN uses in the process. My professor (Professor Frances Kam Yuet Wong) is the one pushing APN legal qualification in Hong Kong and she is super hyped while talking about the difference between APN and RNs. Quoting her publications might be useful as well. This is the proposed structure of the easy:

1. Topic & intro Try to elaborate a bit in about the topic and talk about role of APN with some references

2. Case sharing Please complete my experience of a case with multiple admission because of poor DM control, high blood HbA1c level shows that the diet of patient is not well regulated. With her wife bringing coke and different food to ward. He also suffers from diabetic foot and eye problems.

Then APN in our ward perform education in insulin injections, concepts of diet modification, medication adherence and regular blood glucose level checking to patient and his wife. In the process, different advanced education and communication skills are used with possible minor conflicts between patient and nurses on diet changes, which was resolved by the mediation of our experienced APN Please make use of Chinese names: Patient: Mr Chan, his wife: Mrs Chan, Nurses: APN: Miss Wong, Junior RN Mr Cheung

3. Evaluation (most important part) Elaborate on the case and review all the skills APN used in the whole process. Put different models in and highlight the role of APN in the case and what will happen if the case is handled by junior RNs. These are the models you may want to make use of but not limited to: QF levels: 7 levels of attainment/education in Hong Kong – talks about the difference between APN and RN – https://www.hkqf.gov.hk/filemanager/en/content_13/The%20revised%20GLD%20and%20the%20Explanatory%20Notes_Eng_April_2018.pdf Consensus Model for APRN regulatory Model Health belief model Transtheoretical model of behavioural change

4. Conclusion Talk about the importance of APN, APN qualification in Hong Kong is not legalized yet, there is only RN register in Hong Kong at the moment. In public hospitals, there is RN and APN but they are all holding RN certificate only. APN in Hong Kong usually holds a master degree with postgraduate certification in their own specialty and have at least 7 years of experience. Then make a short comment in importance in recognise APN legally in Hong Kong. I have attached the course menu to you and two of the important lecture notes related to the assignment. Please make use of it. The assignment will be online checked for plagiarism and required to use APA format as referencing.
