By the middle of the eighteenth century, most Latin American countries have overcome the initial post-independence decades that were filled by political, economic, and social unrest. Political instability, which was not always obtained by democratic means, and economic recovery, promoted by Europe’s increasing demand of raw materials, created a new atmosphere for Latin American peoples. Independence leaders have claimed to fight for freedom, equality, and liberty for all Spanish Americans, who had suffered under Spanish dominance. Certainly, independence transformed Spanish America’s governments, economies, and societies. Despite these transformations, there were continuities that remained form the colonial period. Considering the different contexts that Latin American societies experienced during the colonial and early national period, explain what transformations and/or continuities existed by the nineteenth century. After reading the chapters of Colonial Latin America and Latin America and its People, see carefully the visual materials listed below. Use the contemporary representations (colonial period-Viceroy Amat’s painting collection and Martinez Compañon’s watercolors, and national periodPancho Fierro’s watercolor) of Latin America societies to explain how such transformations and/or continuities were present.
