Assignment 2: Literature Review and Methods

5-7 pages, double-spaced (plus references list)

For this assignment, you will write initial drafts of two key sections of your research paper: the literature review and methods/data sections. These will build upon the topic that you proposed in your research question assignment. If you prefer, you can also change your research topic at this time. In this case, however, I recommend discussing your new idea with your GSI first.

Literature Review

For this part of the assignment, you should discuss 2-3 scholarly works (most likely books and/or articles) that relate to your area of research. Do not feel that you need to read these works cover to cover (though in the case of relatively short articles it may be useful to read the whole thing). Rather, your goal should be to figure what the author’s main arguments, findings, and research methods are. (In the case of books, you can often do this by reading the first chapter.) This will help you choose what approach to take in your own research or—if you disagree with the author’s approach—what to avoid. Your literature review should accomplish two things.

Summary: You will need to do some amount of summary in the course of writing your literature review. However, summary should be done not for its own sake but rather in the service of motivating your own research (see below), which means that your goal should not be to provide a comprehensive summary of all of the facets of each of these works. Rather, you should describe the really key arguments, findings, and (if relevant) research methods that emerge out of your reading of the literature as a whole (that is, the 2-3 works that you considered).

Motivation/justification:

Use these works to motivate and justify your own intervention into your topic. There are many different ways to do this. You might make the case that the authors have overlooked or underemphasized an important aspect or dimension of your topic that you are going to consider; or that they have overlooked a methodological approach to your topic.(E.g., surveys if the research is mostly interview-based, or interviews if the research is mostly survey-based) that is necessary in order to fully explore this topic.

These strategies are sometimes known as identifying a gap in the literature. Alternatively, you can use the literature to outline a set of expectations about what you will find in your own research, expectations that you can choose to write out as hypotheses if you want. Or, you can lay out a set of competing arguments that emerged from your reading of the literature and then explain that your research is going to find out which of these arguments is best supported with evidence. These strategies can also be combined in various ways, and you should feel free to draw on any of the other strategies that I talked about in lecture as well.

Methods and Data

Your methods/data section should address the following issues:

1) Data collection approach: What type of data will you collect (interviews, survey, observation, documents/records, experiment)?  Why are you choosing this approach? (In other words: why is it a good approach for answering your research question?)

2) Sampling strategy: How will you sample your participants or select your cases? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your sampling plan?

Here you can choose among all of the different sampling/case selection strategies that we discussed in lecture.
If there is a clear population from which you are sampling (whether representative or not). You should state what the population is as well.
For strengths and weaknesses, you should explain why your sampling plan is well suit to answering your research question. You should acknowledge any biases that it may have.

3) Measurement: How will you measure your key concepts?

If you plan to:

conduct a survey, what are the key variables that your questionnaire will capture. (E.g., respondents’ gender, GPA, their parents’ education level, whether they are a member of Greek life, etc.)

Do interviews, what are some of the key questions that you will ask to get at your concepts of interest?

Do an ethnography, what will you look for in your research site?

Analyze documents, what features of the documents will you keep track of?

Finally, conduct an experiment, what conditions will you randomly vary, and what outcomes will you observe?

Explaining Dualism and Physicalism using Kagan’s book

Assignment 2
Answer one of the following questions. (approximate word length, 1,200-1,500 words)
Submit as a Word or PDF Document on Moodle by Nov. 12th. Late penalty is 5% per day, unless you have a documented medical excuse.

Be sure to cite all sources used. For readings assigned in the course, please cite in text. (Author’s last name, and page number). Sources that come from outside of the course are not required or even recommended, but if used must include a clear reference. Please use the following referencing system for outside sources, https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

1.    Firstly, drawing on Kagan’s book, Death, carefully explain Dualism, and carefully explain Physicalism. Excluding free will arguments, explain three arguments for Dualism. (One of these arguments for Dualism should be Descartes’ argument.)  Consider objections to these three arguments for Dualism. All things considered, do you think the case for Dualism or Physicalism is stronger? Defend your answer. Consider a problem with your defense, and explain how you will overcome this problem.

2.      Secondly, what is the problem of personal identity? Explain the best version of the personality view and the bodily view of personal identity?  Develop two objections to each view of personal identity. In the final analysis which view of personal identity do you think is strongest, and how would you respond to the major difficulties with this view. According to Kagan, using his example, explain why he thinks identity is not what matters in survival, and explain what does he think matter? Raise a problem for his view of what matters in survival.

Ensure that you follow the instructions provided keenly. Marking of the assignment is on how you do the task and how you submit the assignment too. In case of any question feel free to ask your instructor for more guidelines before doing the assignment.

Considerations that Joseph and the administrative team must take

Part 1: After completing assigned readings and Ch. 17, consider the following Case Study and also write a paper answering the questions listed at the end of this case study.

Joseph Yang has been hired as the director of an intensive care unit (ICU) at a new community hospital. As a member of the administrative team, he will be working with the chief nursing officer (CNO), the associate CNO, and also the other directors to develop the organizational and governance plan for the new hospital. Joseph and the team are relying on multiple nursing and administrative theories as they make their plans. They know that their patient population will be drawn from a relatively affluent community and that there appears to be a good pool of qualified nurses in the area, many with BSNs and higher degrees. Other than that, they are starting with a blank slate.

Additionally, what are some of the considerations that Joseph and the administrative team must take into account as they plan their nursing organization?
Assuming that the administrative team is a composition of transformational leaders who plan to use the “Strategies for a Transformational Leader” what will be the priority considerations for them in planning their organization?

What role does politics play in shaping the economy

Write a two page response to the following question- What role does politics play in shaping the economy?
More details;

What is the role of politics in economics?
Political economy is the study of production and trade and their relations with law, custom and government; and with the distribution of national income and wealth.

How have economic historians understood the role of politics in shaping country differences in economic development? An impressive recent literature can be sort out according to the degree of “human agency” at work. At the low-agency end are perspectives that stress geography, which is unalterable, leaving little room for human action and hence no room for politics.

At the other end are arguments stressing deliberate, self-aware actions, hence choice, hence a substantial role for politics. In between are arguments where some choice occur in the past or at a specific moment, but little since then. What drives development? Two lines of argument are vigorously debated: explanations that stress human capital and explanations that stress institutions. Within each camp can be found variance on the degree of agency and hence on the role of politics. Both vary as well on how they envisage society and its interaction with both institutions and human capital.

Key Words

Agency, institutions, human capital, choice, political development

INTRODUCTION

What is the role of politics in shaping economic development? Economic historians have made substantial contributions to the study of economic development in recent years, work that deserves attention from political scientists because of its implications for the study of political development. The core dispute pits institutions against human capital.

Does having nuclear weapons prevent conventional war or international interventions

More details;

Nuclear weapons deter conventional wars

There is a risk in aiming for total nuclear disarmament, because the loss of the barrier to conventional escalation will be ruinous

This month, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will open for signature at the United Nations. Signatories will promise never to “develop, test, produce, manufacture … possess or stockpile nuclear weapons”; never to transfer weapons to other parties nor to receive them; and never to “use or threaten to use nuclear weapons”. The treaty’s aims, if they could be universally effected, are noble. After all, the prospect of nations — including an international pariah like North Korea — facing off with their respective nuclear arsenals is horrific. Their renewed use in war would be catastrophic. But there is a risk in aiming for total nuclear disarmament, because deterring nuclear war isn’t their only legitimate use. Nuclear weapons also deter conventional war.

In recent decades, great powers have fought proxy wars, but since 1945, they have not come into direct armed conflict.

Through the Cold War, nuclear weapons kept the peace in Western Europe. Only once, during the Cuban missile crisis, did deterrence come close to breaking, but the then United States president, John F. Kennedy, and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and the rest of the world learned well.

India and Pakistan have skirmished in recent decades, but the realisation that a conflict could escalate to nuclear catastrophe has contributed to the rival nations eventually standing down. The probability that Israel has nuclear weapons is the ultimate guarantor of its existence.

Since the Soviet Union’s first atomic test in 1949, the existence of nuclear weapons in many hands has not only deterred the use of nuclear weapons, but also made nuclear possessors and their adversaries think carefully about the desirability of going to war at all. When conflict has broken out, the nuclear deterrent has limited war aims to those short of total destruction of adversary nations or regime change. That’s why North Korea has sought nuclear capability so fervently.

Franco regime: A Dictatorship that has led to oppression of Catalonia region

This paper is the sum accomplishment of experience in the course of International Studies. To ensure the quality of this paper and fullness of experience in writing them, three requirements are key:

1) The topic must be mutually agreed upon by student and instructor.

2) This research paper is expected to draw on relevant theoretical literature. The literature used to frame the topic can be from one discipline, multiple disciplines, or cross-disciplinary in nature. The thesis will reflect the topic situated into the broader literature employed.

3) Quality research paper needs to be based on primary and/or secondary sources. As such, they may draw on work the student undertook while abroad or in an internship and they will draw on a particular academic literatures. Internet sources (that are not an online version of an academic article, chapter, or book) should be approached with great caution and students must work to differentiate the validity of the source.

(I studied in Spain one semester and while I was visiting to Barcelona in October 19th 2019, I witnessed Catalan independence movement protest which quickly got my attention.

Especially, police brutality and Spanish government oppression reminded me of horror of Franco’s dictatorship which lasted for four decades. We can tie/mention this occasion in the research paper).

All articles and journals need to be peer reviewed. I will suggest to use Jstor.

Encyclopedias and dictionaries are not sources for research papers. We use Turabian, Kate L. A manual for Writers of Research Papers Theses, and Dissertations, Ninth Edition: Chicago style for Students and Researchers.

I have my version of research question which I still waiting for feedback from instructor. I’m not really confident on my research question and thesis. We have to work on this one before moving into other details of the paper.

Research Question: I am researching if Franco’s dictatorship still influencing Spanish regional government that has led to Catalan’s independence movement, specifically focus on historical background in the past how it relates to current situation to find out what other factors impacted to oppress regions through legislation. (My instructor said that it’s vague and easily can be answered Yes/No question. So need to be elaborate and need to form unique and specific research question.

Thesis: Although four decades after the end of Franco’s dictatorship, his regime has had a lasting impact on how Spain controls and governs Catalan region which has fought for their autonomy while experiencing massive political oppression by Spanish national government. (Thesis need to be more specific and address specifically what I will study that related to Catalan “nationalism” and independence.

Outline:

Firstly, introduction/research question

Secondly, methodology

Thirdly, main argument

Further, Franco’s dictatorship in the past

Additionally, Spain’s transition to democracy / (I’m trying to state that Spanish Constitution that was in 1978 states that one no other regions can be apart from the unity of Spanish nation…. need to cite and look up)

Franco’s influences on Catalan Independence movement today. (need to tie that current relationship and current movements to the Franco’s regime)

Catalan referendum and why they want to be separated from Spain?

Opposing argument side if any

Conclusion

PS: We can change the structure too if you have better idea.

I prefer to have someone whose expertise in international studies or history.

Compare and contrast two books of different generations

This assignment requires you to compare and contrast two books from different generations of scholarship based upon each author’s scope, method, and point of view. Then, explain if the books were good, effective pieces, or not—and why. You explain your assertions/critiques (the “why”) by citing the authors’ own work.

A) Scope: What is the range of the author’s argument- what is he/she talking about? What are they setting out to do in the essay?

B) Method: How is the author trying to make his/her case? What types of sources/evidence do they appear to be using or relying upon?

C) Point of view: What is the author ultimately saying? Are they trying to make a new case about something? Are they saying other historians, or a particular historian, have been wrong about something? Also, are they suggesting a new theoretical or methodological direction about something? Do they have a slant?

Your critique: Provide your informed opinion of the essays by noting what the authors have or have not done well and use specific examples (cited) from the essays

The two books are you’ll be comparing are:
“A Report on an Epidemic of Influenza in the City of Chicago in the Fall” of 1918 by John Robertson and America’s forgotten pandemic: the influence of 1918 by, Alfred Crosby.

1.      Matthew 5: 1-12   The Beatitudes- How do you them: as impossible ideals, as goals to be achieved, as wishful blessings upon those who suffer, or as hallmarks of God’s Kingdom? Why?

2.      Romans 7: 14-25    Who is the “I” in the passage? Is it Paul or is Paul speaking for all of humanity? Do Paul’s words confirm at times your own experience of conflict and inability to make the right choices?

3.      Galatians 5: 22-26    What does Paul mean by “fruit of the Spirit”? What types of actions oppose the work the Spirit and what types promote the work of the Spirit? Explain fully.

4.      Colossians 1: 15-20  This is an early Christian hymn of praise to Christ, the creator of all. What image of Christ emerges from this reading for you? What powers are attributed to Christ? Does this image conform to Christ as you have come to know him?

5.      James 2: 14-26    This is the classic NT statement about the interrelationship between faith and good works. Do you find it a helpful measure of your own faith? If so, why? If not, why not?
