Common Mistakes in Essay #2

Less Narration and reflection, More Argument
Strong Thesis Statement
Small claims, not big ones (short space means small claims)
Example: Although corrective lenses make the lives of wearers easier, their necessity is not always convenient, and it is this necessity that takes control away from the user and places it on the technology itself.
Define terms before using them
Use information and sources to make your point.
Do not rely on what you think you already know.
Do not argue why X Tech is an example of Y Concept: Use them to challenge your own assumptions:
Instead of Glasses are an example of technological determinism, progress, or convenience
Progress narrative – For whom? For what?
What is the claim to moral/material betterment
Convenience – in exchange for what?
Control – dependence and trust?

More details;

Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from COVID-19?

There is a saying—“When America catches a cold, Black people get the flu.” Well, in 2020, when America catches coronavirus, Black people die. Blacks in about every state with racial data available have higher contraction rates and higher death rates of COVID-19.

In Michigan, Blacks make up 15% of the state population but represent 35% of people diagnosed with COVID-19. This means that Blacks in Michigan are 133% more likely to contract the novel coronavirus relative to their percentage of the state. With a death rate hovering near 4% in Michigan, Blacks are also over-represented for deaths related to COVID-19, accounting for 40% of all deaths statewide. For comparison, Whites represent 25% of people diagnosed with COVID-19 and 26% of deaths. Whites make-up over 75% of the state population.

In Illinois, Blacks represent about 16% of the state but 30% of people diagnosed with COVID-19. In Chicago, Blacks represent 70% of people who have died from coronavirus. North Carolina, South Carolina, and New York show the same pattern with slightly smaller gaps. Among the four states shown below, Blacks are 74% more likely to contract coronavirus than their percentage of the state. These disparities are likely to continue as the virus spreads to new areas. The coronavirus has not even hit rural America hard yet, where many counties do not even have a single hospital bed.

Analyzing the use of rhetorical strategies in visual creation

Visual Analysis Assignment

Length: 3 pages, double spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman (length does not include Title page, or References page)

The goal of a visual analysis is not to analyze what argument a visual makes, but to analyze how the creator of that visual presents the argument. You’ll do this by analyzing the use of rhetorical strategies. Using a visual argument related to the social topic you have chosen for the semester, you will perform an objective analysis of the strengths and weaknesses in the visual’s use of ethos, logos, and pathos.

Choose a political cartoon, billboard, poster, or infographic related to the social topic that you have chosen to study for the semester to analyze for your paper.

To find your visual argument Google Image Search your topic and then any one of the genre terms listed above. For Example: Death penalty political cartoon, Death penalty billboard, Death penalty poster, Death penalty infographic. Choose the one that you think has the most to write about concerning ethos, pathos, logos, and target audience

Analyzing the use of rhetorical strategies in visual creation

Content/Subject: Your rhetorical analysis will consist of your analysis of the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos. It must also identify the target audience of our visual argument.

·         Logos is concerned with the logic of the argument. In considering a visual’s use of logos, you will want to focus on issues such as how the visual is constructed. For this you will need to address the organization and composition of the visual. You might also discuss the medium, scale, and perspective.

·         Pathos deals with emotion. Here, you should identify any attempts to evoke a particular emotion. The content of the visual, the use of color, as well as scale and perspective can be useful in addressing the visual’s appeal to emotions. Finally, you will want to evaluate whether these strategies are effective in conveying the argument that the visual is advocating.

·         Ethos deals primarily with credibility. You will want to examine the creators’ reputations or authority, particularly if they represent an agency or corporation. These factors as well as the visual itself will either improve or detract from the visual’s credibility and effectiveness.

Specific guidelines for this assignment are: Your visual cannot be a just a photograph. It must have some design component (graphics, colors, modifications)

Address all three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, logos, and target audience

Adherence to APA format including a References page where you cite the visual argument

Attach a copy of your visual to your analysis as an appendix.

Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
