Points: The research paper will comprise 17 percent (170 points) of your final grade.  An additional 50 points will be given over a period of weeks for selecting a topic for the paper, writing a bibliography, an outline, and an introductory paragraph.

Arlene’s siblings had little contact with her when she was growing up except on birthdays and holidays. Recently, the director of the facility sent the Thomas’s a letter to inform them that the state is closing the facility and that they need to find housing for Arlene.

Laura, a nurse from the residential facility where Arlene lives, phones Agnes to arrange a home visit. Agnes tells Laura that Arlene cannot live with her and Mark, and she asks Laura to talk to her youngest son Jim, 47 years old. Although Jim has had minimal contact with his sister, he agrees to meet with Laura. He tells her that his parents’ health is declining, especially his mother’s, and proposes that Arlene might be able to move into the in-law apartment in his home. Jim and Laura arrange another meeting that includes Arlene, as well as Jim’s wife and their adolescent twin daughters.

Although Arlene would receive a small subsidy to move into the facility, the family would have to pay approximately $2000 a month for expenses. LCDs are available to display the arbitrary images such as in a general-purpose computer display or the fixed images which can be displayed or hidden such as preset words, digits, and 7-segment displays as in a digital clock, They use the same basic technology except that the arbitrary images are made up of a large number of small pixels while other displays have larger elements.

LCDs are use d in DVD players, the gaming devices, the clocks, the watches, the calculators, and the telephones. They have replaced the cathode ray tube (CRT) displays in most applications. They are available in a wider range of screen sizes than CRT and plasma displays, and they do not use phosphors, they do not suffer image burn-in,  LCDs are susceptible to image persistence.

LCD’s have no radiation emission from the screen, they are better under brighter conditions because of anti-glare technology, and LCD TVs are not affect by the increase or decrease in the air pressure.

LCD’s are lighter in weight with respect to the screen size. They can also be used as a computer monitor.  The images appear with greater resolution, and the colors of images look more realistic. They save the electricity bills because of lower power consumption, they consume less than 1/3 the power of a comparable CRT,  they consume less electricity than a CRT and also produce little heat.
