Some thinkers have argued that Descartes starts modern philosophy on a bad path because he based knowledge on certainty, and there are very few things in life that we can know with certainty.  What do you think of this view?

(This question comes from Miller at the end of the chapter on Berkeley), “In spite of its apparent radicalness, Berkeley views his theory of reality as the most commonsensical.  How would you defend this claim in your own words?  In the end, is it really commonsensical?

More details;

René Descartes is often credited with being the “Father of Modern Philosophy.” This title is justified due both to his break with the traditional Scholastic-Aristotelian philosophy prevalent at his time and to his development and promotion of the new, mechanistic sciences. His fundamental break with Scholastic philosophy was twofold. First, Descartes thought that the Scholastics’ method was prone to doubt given their reliance on sensation as the source for all knowledge. Second, he wanted to replace their final causal model of scientific explanation with the more modern, mechanistic model.

Descartes attempted to address the former issue via his method of doubt. His basic strategy was to consider false any belief that falls prey to even the slightest doubt. This “hyperbolic doubt” then serves to clear the way for what Descartes considers to be an unprejudiced search for the truth. This clearing of his previously held beliefs then puts him at an epistemological ground-zero. From here Descartes sets out to find something that lies beyond all doubt. He eventually discovers that “I exist” is impossible to doubt and is, therefore, absolutely certain. It is from this point that Descartes proceeds to demonstrate God’s existence and that God cannot be a deceiver.

Conducting an analysis on an opinion piece or editorial news

Argument Analysis Paper

Directions: This writing assignment will require you to pick an opinion piece or editorial from a news source (online or print) and conduct a thorough analysis of its content using what we’ve learned about argumentation so far. The OpEd piece must discuss a relevant topic at the global, domestic or local level and must be from an article within the last 30 days.

Notes about picking the right OpEd piece:

Please make sure the piece is indeed an OpEd article. If it is a news piece, the author won’t be crafting an argument so it would not work for this assignment. If using a national news publication such as the Washington Post, you must first locate the Opinion section. Then, you may pick any piece:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/
Please only use articles from credible news publications (e.g., Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, etc.).
You can access a wide range of articles from news publications using this database: US Newsstream (accessible from the SMC library webpage or found here:  https://search-proquest-com.libdb.smc.edu/usnews/advanced)

Conducting an analysis on an opinion piece or editorial news

Answer the following questions in an essay format:

Who is the speaker and what is his/her purpose? Dig into the foundations of the author’s credibility, as well as what he or she sets out to do in this article. In other words, who is the author and what are their qualifications? Then, demonstrate how their qualifications may help or hinder the validity of their argument made in this article.

What is the article about? This question requires you to clearly identify the argument that the speaker is trying to advance throughout their piece (note: I am not interested in a summary of the article here). What is the purpose for this OpEd? Find and quote the author’s thesis and explain what it means in your own words. You should also identify the kind of proposition it is (policy, value, or fact) and draw on the article to support your answer.
What support has the speaker given on behalf of this conclusion? Look for any and all pieces of supporting material that the author uses in order to support their perspective (i.e., statistics, personal interviews, stores, etc.). Did their use or misuse of evidence help/hinder this article?

What themes or points of clash have emerged from this article? Explain what debate the author is getting into and which side he/she is on. What audience would his/her argument appeal to and why?
What solutions can you provide for this crisis? Please provide possible or alternative views to the article. In other words, play devil’s advocate and argue the opposing side. Also, explain how you personally feel about the topic. Be sure to provide support for your own analysis and argument. This is where the outside sources will come in.

ASSIGNMENT

Recall the study discussed in (Chapter 3, Part A video) lecture by Leibert & Baron (1972).

In this study, an experimental design (quantitative NOT qualitative) was used to determine whether viewing aggressive films was linked with an increased willingness to hurt another child.

Unlike Leibert and Baron’s study (1972), which employed a quantitative approach, you will be designing a qualitative study examining the effects of screen time (e.g., TV viewing, cellphones, etc.) on children.

Examples of research topics include:

•             Highschool students’ perspectives of the link between screen time (e.g., social media) and physical activity.

•             Workshop Assignment

a) What is the purpose of your study? (2 marks) (e.g. to examine children’s perspectives regarding violent video games and aggression)?

•             Workshop Assignment

b) Procedure – Provide a detailed account of how you will carry out your research study. (7 marks total) For this section, make sure to:

Describe your participants and explain how you will recruit them (e.g. age range, classroom members, members of a sports team, etc.) (3 marks)

Select two of the following child-friendly methods discussed in your textbook and explain how you will incorporate them into your study. (4 marks – 2 marks per method)

Firstly, participant Observation

Secondly, photography

What are the animal cell parts and functions?

Terms in this set (15)
  • Nucleus. The control center of the cell.
  • Ribosomes. Produce proteins (protein synthesis)
  • Nuclear membrane. Controls what enters and leaves the nucleus.
  • Mitochondria. Powerhouse, produces ATP.
  • Lysosome. Break down materials in the cell — also known as death sac.
  • Golgi bodies. …
  • Vacuole. …
  • Cytoplasm.

All the tissues and organs of the body originate from a microscopic structure (the fertilized ovum), which consists of a soft jelly-like material enclosed in a membrane and containing a vesicle or small spherical body inside which are one or more denser spots. This may be regarded as a complete cell. All the solid tissues consist largely of cells essentially similar to it in nature but differing in external form.

In the higher organisms a cell may be defined as “a nucleated mass of protoplasm of microscopic size.” Its two essentials, therefore, are: a soft jelly-like material, similar to that found in the ovum, and usually styled cytoplasm, and a small spherical body imbedded in it, and termed a nucleus. Some of the unicellular protozoa contain no nuclei but granular particles which, like true nuclei, stain with basic dyes. The other constituents of the ovum, viz., its limiting membrane and the denser spot contained in the nucleus, called the nucleolus, are not essential to the type cell, and in fact many cells exist without them.

Review of Classical Era Music

The dates of the classical period in Western music are generally accepted as being between about 1750 and 1820. However, the term classical music is used in a colloquial sense as a synonym for Western art music, which describes a variety of Western musical styles from the ninth century to the present, and especially from the sixteenth or seventeenth to the nineteenth. This article is about the specific period from 1730 to 1820.

The classical period falls between the baroque and the romantic periods. The best-known composers from this period are Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert; other notable names include Luigi Boccherini, Muzio Clementi, Antonio Soler, Antonio Salieri,François Joseph Gossec, Johann Stamitz, Carl Friedrich Abel, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Christoph Willibald Gluck. Ludwig van Beethoven is also regarding either as a romantic composer or a composer who was part of the transition to the romantic.

Briefly describe the program/policy of interest. Identify and discuss the theoretical underpinnings of the program/policy. Comment on how the program theory was identified and selected

Briefly describe the program policy of interest

Purpose
Paying attention to theory reflects the growing rigor/sophistication and higher stakes associated with program evaluation. As cited in Grembowski (2016), “programs are more likely to be effective when they are based on theory, compared to those lacking a theoretical base (p. 29).”

Thus, for this assignment, identify and critique a theory that can be used to explain or provide strategies for the desired outcome of the program you are evaluating. Be sure there is alignment with the theory and the focus of the program evaluation (e.g. behavior theory [individual level]; relational coordination [team-based]; transformational leadership [leader], or organizational learning [organizational]).

Course Objectives

This assignment aligns with the following objectives:
1.      Describe the key concepts, goals, and standards of program evaluation.
2.      Identify health behavior theories to inform program actions and guide evaluation of outcomes.

Assignment
This assignment is a short (3-5 page) paper describing and applying a health behavior theory, or other relevant theoretical assumptions (e.g., change, leadership, organizational, learning, complexity) that explain the anticipated changes resulting from the program activities. The theory may be an explicit formal theory or test hypotheses of reasoned/anticipated causation.

Develop the paper according to the following guidance:
•       Briefly describe the program/policy of interest

•       Identify and discuss the theoretical underpinnings of the program/policy. Comment on how the program theory was identified and selected  (e.g., your understanding/assumptions, conversations with program staff,  use of existing formal theory)

•       Discuss the category or type of theory being used (e.g., health behavior change, educational); its discipline origins and evolution; key concepts; unit of analysis targeted (e.g., individual, team, organization, community).

•       Research and describe if theory has been used effectively in similar programs or studies (e.g., Stages of Change theory used effectively in addiction research). If this is the first time use of theory, discuss why you chose the theory and why it will be novel and useful for the program.

•       Comment on how well the theory explains the relationships between program activities and anticipated outcomes and any potential weaknesses in linkages revealed.

•       Finally, conclude the paper by discussing the advantage of articulating the theoretical underpinnings of the program in  evaluation.

The purpose of this Research project is to demonstrate your ability to

Analyze and synthesize researched information about stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination and discuss how it impacts individuals and groups

Discuss the required video, https://www.ted.com/talks/paul_bloom_can_prejudice_ever_be_a_good_thing#t-787329 and the impact genetics and environment has on biases and prejudices .
Evaluate prejudice and discrimination in the real world and analyze the impact of stereotyping, prejudices and discrimination.

Include this article into your sources: https://nobaproject.com/textbooks/new-textbook-85ab2831-df95-4ace-99ff-a115b94be5d9/modules/prejudice-discrimination-and-stereotyping

Discuss how racism and discrimination impacts individuals and groups

Research these topics and address all these questions below in your paper:
Compare and contrast the concepts: prejudices, stereotypes, and discrimination?

What does the author, Paul Bloom, say in the required video about prejudices and biases? Please make sure to describe specific parts of the video.

According to the literature and research, why might we innately be prone to stereotyping and prejudices? How might stereotyping and also prejudices be part of a survival mechanism? What does the Evolutionary theory suggest is the role evolution plays in prejudices and biases?

According to literature and research, how does culture and learning play a role in prejudices, stereotyping, and racism? How does external factors, like religion, the news media, social media sites, politics, etc. play a role in stereotypes and also discrimination?

Firstly, what is Implicit Bias? How might implicit biases play a role in stereotyping, prejudices, discrimination and racism?
Secondly, what is the Social Identity theory and how does it relate to biases? What also is in-group vs. out-group, and how does it apply to prejudices, discrimination and racism?

Research Stereotype Threat.

Thirdly, what does the research show about how stereotype threat can impact individuals and groups of people and the way they behave and perform?

Fourthly, what are the effects of prejudices, stereotypes, and discrimination on individuals, groups of people, and to our society as a whole?

Also, evaluate real world stereotyping, prejudices and/or discrimination to discuss how these terms and concepts above may have played a role in real life situations and how the people involved were/are impacted? (see suggestions below)

Understanding that we all have innate and/or learned prejudice/bias, what does the research suggest we can do to combat them and also make them less influential?

Lastly, what is your own reaction to the video and the research? Where do you believe we get our prejudices from? Also describe your own personal prejudices and biases and evaluate where you might have adopted these biases. (This is the only time in your paper where you will write in the 1st person, please only add 1-2 paragraphs for this section).

Assess two major arguments from the World Trade Organization

Instructions
For years, the merits of globalization and diversity of cultures and races created challenges for government administrations, requiring them to develop new policies adapting to the emerging conditions and challenges. On August 7, 2018, President Trump imposed strict sanctions on Iran. It is the reversal of the nuclear agreement of former President Obama. The sanctions declare that Iran is not to trade in gold and precious metals, no sales should be conducted to or from Iran of graphite or metals such as aluminum and steel, and no purchase of U.S. dollar banknotes are permitted.

Additionally, Iran is not to purchase U.S. passenger planes, and tariffs are imposed on Iran’s automotive sector. Also, the U.S. will no longer allow the import of Iranian carpets and foods. More sanctions involving the oil business will follow in November 2018 (Ward, 2018). Using this example and others from current events, consider the opposition to the globalization of trade and the integration of the world’s economy.
