Transnational politics

A paper focuses on violent transnational networks. Particularly, in Africa. Can be a comparaison between violent groups (i.e. book haram and lord resistance army) Use literature review to bring out components and compare and contrast how these violent groups have emerged and sustained ( i.e., why is Lord Resistance Army silently dying and not book haram) Must have a strong argument: (i.e., explore to which extend and under what conditions do violent non-state actors/groups emerge and sustain… Argument would be like:

These groups emerge and sustain depending on these components….). Must be a research paper. And straight to the point. (I.e., introduction might start like this: “This paper seeks to scrutinize…) ***ONLY INSTRUCTION FROM MY PROFESSOR: Students will write a 20-page research paper on a topic of their choice. Papers can either be a) empirical papers or b) a critical review of the literature on a particular topic.

Empirical papers require the selection of a research puzzle, the identification of a theory that could explain this puzzle (not an entire paradigm), and provide evidence that tests the proposed theory. Critical review papers do not simply summarize the literature on the topic.

Instead, it critically analyzes the literature and suggests a typology, areas of possible synthesis, critical weaknesses, or avenues for future research. Papers must be double-spaced with normal margins. References lists and appendices do not count towards the page limit. Papers are due on November 29 by the end of class.

Aligning Actions with Words

Aligning Actions with Words On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. In New Orleans the hurricane caused a massive storm surge on Lake Pontchartrain, a form of tidal wave that wiped out lakeside communities outside of New Orleans, and the levees with the city were breached. About 80% of New Orleans flooded, leaving hundreds of people trapped within the flood zone. The next week became a stream of failed expectations and operational and communication gaffs that hindered the rescue and recovery efforts in New Orleans. The continuous wave of failed expectations caused significant reputational and operational harm to the government, especially FEMA and its Director Michael Brown, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, and President George W. Bush. Watch the PBS Frontline documentary on Hurricane Katrina, The Storm. https://www.pbs.org/video/frontline-the-storm/ Analyze how this situation is a demonstration of failing to align actions with words. Compare and contrast a minimum of three ways leadership demonstrated failing to align actions with words. Were there any comments made that may have been said to “feel good in the moment?” Why or why not? Conclude your paper with a description of how leadership could have earned the trust of the public. The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

Word Length Effect on Memory

It has to be APA format with Introduction, Discussion, References, Methods and Results sections. Also, I have the sources which can be put in to the paper instead of you finding it.

I have all the links just need the paper to be written. Also the results section should be: 1) Report descriptive statistics. You should describe the different treatment groups defined by the independent variable by reporting the mean and standard deviation? 2) Report inferential statistics. You should report the results of the statistical test that was run, using the APA-style reporting method we discussed in class (examples are present in the statistics crash course ppt file). You should also interpret what those results mean for the experiment’s hypothesis. Are the differences between the treatment groups meaningful, or not? The methods sections should be: 1) A participants subsection, in which the research subjects who participated in the experiment (you and your fellow classmates) should be described. In addition, the sampling methods used to recruit the research subjects should be reported. Finally, whether IRB approval and informed consent was obtained prior to the start of the experiment should be reported. (A quick note on ethics – This project will not go through the process of IRB approval. The data generated here are used solely for the purpose of instruction, and will never be published. Therefore, this experiment is not considered research and IRB approval is not necessary. A statement to this effect should be present in the methods section.) 2) A procedure subsection, in which the methods used to collect data should be described at a level of detail that would plausibly allow another researcher to replicate the experiment. This should include a clear description of each phase of the experiment. 3) An apparatus subsection, in which the equipment used to collect data should be described. A document with notes on the methods for this experiment can be found below.

This document is included to help students understand the experiment as it will be conducted, but students should use their own words to describe the methods of this experiment. Introduction section should be: )

Provide a general introduction to the topic of the paper. This often includes background information on the psychological construct the experiment will try to measure (for example, memory). This part of the introduction should help to convince the reader that the topic is important. 2) Provide a statement of the purpose of the study.

This section should include a clear discussion of the variables that the experiment examines, and the hypothesized relationship between those variables. 3) Describe the research strategy used to evaluate the hypothesis.

Discussion section should be: 1) Restate the hypothesis and summarize the results of the experiment 2) Place the results in context with other research, citing papers as necessary.

3) Interpret the results in light of the methods used. This section should have a discussion of the study’s limitations, including any threats to internal or external validity that may be present in the experimental design.

4) Discuss the implications of the data, how it could be applied, and suggestions for how future research can extend the results of the experiment described in this discussion section.
