What are the stages does Phil go through to gain his liberation

Write an essay of 5-7 pages that demonstrates engagement with the assigned material from class since the midterm, including D.T. Suzuki, Alexander Lowen, the short stories where appropriate, Pema Chodron, and/or T.S. Eliot.

Your task is to write an interpretation and analysis of the film Ground Hog Day as a story of enlightenment.  What are the stages does Phil go through to gain his liberation? What is the key moment in his awakening? Be sure to draw on the assigned readings from class to help you develop your analysis. Do a careful, “close reading” of the film. This means you can’t be too specific. Develop your discussion by focusing in on specific examples—key moments–from the film. Explain what you mean and why you believe your “key moment” is essential to understanding the character’s development.

Discuss the elements of filmmaking in a horror film

Topic 1: Far from existing solely as a means of escaping reality, it is without question that the horror film may also operate as both a reflection, and commentary upon, very real social and political conditions or tensions. In a well-developed essay, being sure to focus on key scenes and to discuss elements of filmmaking, explore a specific horror film, horror film franchise, or sub-genre of horror film and its relationship to a specific category of identity, philosophical problem, or social/political issue.

Some possible areas of discussion for this topic might include:
Firstly, nineties “Race Horror” and the Failures/Successes of Multiculturalism or Affirmative Action
Secondly, gender/Sexuality in the Slasher Film
Thirdly, Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and the AIDS Crisis
Fourthly, the Serial Killer and the Moral Problem of Good or Evil
Lastly, creature Films and Geopolitics

Topic 2:

As no small number of the critics we have encountered this semester suggest, the monster—in whatever shape, size, or other guise it appears—is a valuable cultural interpretive tool that can tell us as much about ourselves as it can the society that we live in. The monster may even tell us about the values that the society we live in wishes to inculcate in us. The monster can even alert us to the dangers or problems inherent in these supposedly neutral or positive values. In a well-developed essay exploring any combination of visual cultural forms. (film, television, music videos, advertisements, etc.) trace the genealogy of a specific monster over time. Also, discuss the various ways in which it has reflected, critiqued, or commented upon personal and/or social anxieties connected to a specific time and place.

Some possible areas of discussion for this topic might include:
Firstly, the Alien/Extra-Terrestrial and the Nation-State/National Security
Secondly, the Vampire, Sexual Desire, and Social Taboos
Thirdly, physical Disability, Monstrosity, and Ableism
Frankenstein’s Monster and Philosophy
Werewolves, Western Civilization, and Culture

Topic 3:

The openly fascist Golden Dawn’s terrorizing of refugees and immigrants in Greece and the revival of the National Front in France in recent years have made eminently clear that the fascist threat has never left Europe. Here in the US, white nationalist organizations like Richard Spencer’s National Policy Institute and its advocacy of “peaceful” ethnic cleansing, white supremacist Jeremy Christian fatally stabbing two men and wounding one other for defending a Muslim woman of color, and the rise of far-right and fascist vigilante street gangs have demonstrated that the U.S. is no less immune to fascist provocation.

Our present political moment is definitely one where fascist creeps content to hide in the internet’s darkest recesses and on mountain compounds are demanding more attention. In a well-developed essay, discuss a specific far-right, fascist, crypto-fascist, white nationalist, militia, or hate organization and advance an argument for how they and the evil they represent are to be challenged and defeated.

Some possible areas of discussion for this topic might include:
The Alt-Right in the White House
Neo-Folk/Heathenry and “Hipster Fascism”
The Militia Movement
Richard Spencer and the National Policy Institute
White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and the Origins of American Fascism

How is Oedipus Rex an example of ancient Greek drama

Purpose

Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles with the play Trifles by Susan Glaspell. You should focus on 3 or more of the following elements in your essay: theme, character, setting, dialogue, stage directions, plot, and structure. Please consider 1 or more of the following questions in your essay:

How is Oedipus Rex an example of ancient Greek drama, and also how is Trifles an example of modern drama? Ancient Greek drama is often characterize by a ritualistic tone. The presence of a chorus is an example of this tone.
Is Susan Glaspell’s Trifles an example of a feminist play? In a feminist story or play, the female characters typically struggle to assert their rights in a society dominated by men.
The title character in Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex is often refer to as a tragic hero.

A tragic hero or heroine begins the play as a well-loved person of stature. But that stature disappears, because of a tragic set of circumstances that (a) is foretold, (b) is inevitable, and (c) is brought about by the hero’s or heroine’s own actions. Compare and contrast Oedipus, Creon, or another character from Oedipus Rex with Minnie Foster or another character from Trifles. Is Minnie a tragic heroine? Is Minnie’s tragic circumstance. (being arrested for and possibly convicted of murder after killing her husband) foretold, inevitable, and also brought about by her own actions, like Oedipus’s circumstance?

How is Oedipus Rex an example of ancient Greek drama

Secondly, list some sources and uses of cash in a corporate setting.

More details;

What is Capital Structure?

Capital structure refers to the amount of debt and/or equity employed by a firm to fund its operations and finance its assets. A firm’s capital structure is typically expressed as a debt-to-equity or debt-to-capital ratio.

Debt and equity capital are used to fund a business’s operations, capital expenditures, acquisitions, and other investments. There are tradeoffs firms have to make when they decide whether to use debt or equity to finance operations, and managers will balance the two to find the optimal structure.

The optimal capital structure of a firm is often defined as the proportion of debt and equity that results in the lowest weighted average cost of capital (WACC) for the firm. This technical definition is not always use in practice, and firms often have a strategic or philosophical view of what the ideal structure should be.

In order to optimize the structure, a firm can issue either more debt or equity.

Critical race and or intersectional feminist concepts analysis

Create an 8-10 page essay that analyzes a media example using the critical race and/or intersectional feminist concepts and theories learned throughout the course through these concepts.

– The media example you analyze may be drawn from popular culture, activist culture, news media, or even consumer culture. The first step in developing this essay is to create a proposal.

– For the essay proposal, your task is to develop an essay topic that meets the criteria of the assignment. A successful proposal will be concise and clearly written; focused and also narrow in scope; and demonstrate understanding of how specific course concepts and theories will apply to the chosen media example.

Additionally, the proposal should clearly identify: a research question, the argument, a brief description of the chosen media example and reasons for choosing it. Also, three main points of analysis that you anticipate making. The three points of analysis should clearly reference the scholarly sources you’ll be using in your analysis.

Four academic sources must be in the proposal, at least two of which are above. A successful proposal will do more than simply name or list the four sources. Instead, the proposal will identify important concepts from these sources and demonstrate how these sources will be applicable to the media example. Source selection will be evaluated, in part, on the demonstrated relevance of the academic sources (and specific concepts) to the proposed topic.

Proposal Structure

The essay proposal to be in essay style (in sentences, not point form), and be approx. 3 pages in length

The proposal must use the following sub-headings: Research Question(s), Preliminary Thesis Statement, Media Example, Point 1, Point 2, Point 3.

Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899) is a turn-of-the-century novel that deals with gender roles and identity. Edna Pontellier becomes the quintessential non-conforming mother-woman who must struggle with her own identity in the Creole society. In a short essay (4-5 paragraphs), you will need to consider the following issues:

According to Chopin’s depiction, how are gender roles between husbands and wives presented in the Creole society? In other words, what sort of role, responsibilities, and behavior apply to the female? What sort of role, responsibilities, and behavior apply to the male? Explain. What is Chopin’s thesis regarding gender roles in society?

Chopin presents characters in each gender who conform according to the expected roles and characters who refuse to conform. Select ONE of the following pairs and compare and contrast the degree to which EACH one fulfills the gender role in society: Edna Pontellier and Adele Ratignolle OR Leonce Pontellier and Robert LeBrun. Additionally, what are some SPECIFIC examples?
What does the symbol of the sea signify for Edna? Also, what does Chopin mean by these lines: “The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude: to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace”? Finally, to what extent do you sympathize with Edna Pontellier and her actions?

Essay Task:

“Longer and harsher prison sentences help reduce crime and protect the community”.

This statement has been made by a wide range of politicians in Australia, especially around election times. This is also a statement reflect in much media reporting on crime and justice. Your task for this essay is to consider if this statement is true or false, with reference to a particular case. You will answer the question by drawing on established sentencing aims discussed in this unit, and support your argument with reference to relevant academic research and also literature.

Below are step by step instructions about how to approach this essay task:

1. Pick your case.

Watch the videos from You be the Judge (Victoria): https://virtualjudge.sentencingcouncil.vic.gov.au

and You Be The Judge Queensland: https://www.sentencingcouncil.qld.gov.au/judgeforyourself/home

Pick any one of these that you find interesting to write about. At the start of your essay, clearly state which case you have chosen. You don’t need to provide further details about the case, your tutor will have watched them too and know their content.

Watch the full video, make sure you listen to all options and comments.

2. For your chosen case, consider the five aims of punishment specific in Victoria’s Sentencing Act:

 –       Just punishment

–       Specific and General Deterrence

–       Rehabilitation

–       Denunciation

–       To protect the community from the offender

3. Discuss in your essay:

How does this sentence meet/fulfill these particular aims?

Do some of these aims conflict? How/why?

Which aim(s) should take precedence, e.g. which aims would you argue are more important in this particular case?

Is there another way/alternative sentence to respond to the offence that could achieve this?

Critically discuss whether a longer and harsher sentence would have been more effective in achieving these purposes of sentencing. Additionally, support your answer with reference to available research and literature.

For this essay, we expect a minimum of 12 scholarly references. Please note, 8 of these references have to be independently sources, i.e. that they do not form part of the prescribed reading list.

Please see separate Essay Guide for further information about format, links to library support, submissions and so on.
