Over twenty-five percent of all amphibians are in serious danger of going extinct. Why are some species more vulnerable to extinction than others?  The Earth’s human population has doubled in less than fifty years, and will reach seven billion in 2011. Further, what challenges do we face with this unprecedented growth? What factors might most effect the rates of this growth into the future?
Population ecology is the study of these and other questions about what factors affect population and how and why a population changes over time. Many people will, at some point in their lives, find themselves in the role of a counsellor without having a true understanding of the concept of counselling or what the role of the professional counsellor entails.

There is a big difference between a professional counsellor and a person who uses some counselling skills as part of their role, for example as a friend or colleague. In this section, we are going to approach constructing the confidence interval and developing the hypothesis test similarly to how we approached those of the difference in two proportions.

There are a few extra steps we need to take, however. First, we need to consider whether the two populations are independent.
