The relationship between at-risk communities and crime

The social ecology school highlights the relationship between at-risk communities and crime.  A strong sense of community, collective efficacy, and social altruism can guard against a wide array of social problems, even amongst the poorest neighbourhoods. For this week’s discussion, re-read the relevant sections of the text on pages 208-214 (230-237 of the 5th edition).  Once you have reviewed the central tenets of the social ecology approach, please answer the following questions:

Firstly, What are the community-level factors that contribute to higher crime rates? Secondly,  In your answer, be sure to include and highlight the key terms/concepts and components in pages 208-214.

Thirdly,  Based on this ecological analysis and perspective, what can be done to improve community life and minimize the risk of crime?

Fourthly, What efforts ought to be prioritized or do you consider most important in ameliorating the symptoms of community disorganization?

Further, Can you find and provide a link to a program, project, or community effort that has aimed to achieve the goals you outlined above (question 2) in London (or if unable to find an example particular to London, can you find an example in Ontario? or Canada?).

Also, If you are unable to find a concrete example, please hypothesize some of the reasons that such efforts are not readily found/applied.

4.  Write a short conclusion.  While there is no minimum length requirement for these conclusion , please aim for more than a mere one-sentence, superficial response.  Your reply ought to be thorough and thoughtful, showcasing your critical thinking skills and evidencing your knowledge and understanding of the assigned readings. Remember to be respectful

This paper focuses on ADVANCED ERGONOMICS. Take a look at your own life. What WMSDs might you face? Do you recognize all of the risks?

ADVANCED ERGONOMICS-Take a look at your own life

Firstly, In this unit lesson, we discuss the risk factors associated with the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Ergonomic injuries are prevalent in the healthcare industry due to the nature of the work required as illustrated in our lesson with Mr. Bach, a certified nurse assistant who injured his back while attempting to assist a resident from the floor to the bed. In recent years, many facilities have implemented policies, purchased equipment, and provided training to address ergonomic injuries. However, WMSDs, specifically back injuries, are still pretty commonplace within the industry. It is unclear if healthcare workers recognize the risks of lifting and moving patients.

Firstly, Take a look at your own life.

Secondly, What WMSDs might you face?

Thirdly, Do you recognize all of the risks?

More detail;

What is WMSDs?
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons, and nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, and tension neck syndrome are examples.
What causes WMSD?
Examples of work conditions that may lead to WMSD include routine lifting of heavy objects, daily exposure to whole body vibration, routine overhead work, work with the neck in chronic flexion position, or performing repetitive forceful tasks.
Why are musculoskeletal disorders a problem in the workplace?
Exposure to these workplace risk factors puts workers at a higher level of MSD risk. It’s common sense: high task repetition, forceful exertions and repetitive/sustained awkward postures fatigue the worker’s body beyond their ability to recover, leading to a musculoskeletal imbalance and eventually an MSD.

‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍Lung cancer screening – diagnostic and screening tools

This is an essay which discusses the lung cancer screening and the available diagnostic and screening tools.

‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍Lung cancer screening – diagnostic and screening tools

Firstly, identify a lung cancer diagnostic or screening tool. What is its purpose, and what age group it targets. Has testing on this specific tool done?

Secondly, discuss the predictive ability of the test. For instance

  • how do you know the test is reliable and valid?
  • What are the reliability and validity values?
  • What are the predictive values?
  • Is it sensitive to measure what it has been developed to measure? For instance, HIV, or depression in older adults, or Lyme disease?
  • Would you integrate this tool into your advanced nursing practice based on the information you have read about the test, why or why not?

Thirdly, the below information may be helpful in about ‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍Lung cancer screening FAQ:

  1. What is the meaning of…?
  2. Predictive value of a test:  (PV) is a measure of the probability of a positive test result when the disease is present.
    • Pos‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍itive predictive value:  The number of the people who test positive who actually have the disease.
    • Negative predictive value: The number of the people who test negative who truly do not have the disease.
  3. Sensitivity:  measure of a screening test’s ability to accurately identify disease when it is present. The higher the sensitivity of a tool, the fewer the cases that will go undetected and the greater sensitivity of the tool to detect disease.
  4. Specificity:  measure of a screening test’s ability to correctly identify those with the disease and to exclude the persons who do not have the disease.  The higher the specificity of the screening tool the fewer persons will be incorrectly identified at-risk.
  5. Validity:  ability of the tool to actually measure wh‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍at it says it measures.

Write a 2 pages essay about a drug that has been recall ed

More details;

When I was twelve years old, a drunk driver hit the car my mother was driving while I was in the backseat. I have very few memories of the accident, but I do faintly recall a serious but calming face as I was gently lift ed out of the car. The paramedic held my hand as we traveled to the hospital. I was in the hospital for several weeks and that same paramedic came to visit me almost every day. During my stay, I also got to know the various doctors and nurses in the hospital on a personal level.

I remember feeling anxiety about my condition, but not sadness or even fear. It seemed to me that those around me, particularly my family, were more fearful of what might happen to me than I was. I don’t believe it was innocence or ignorance, but rather a trust in the abilities of my doctors. It was as if my doctors and I had a silent bond.

Now that I’m older I fear death and sickness in a more intense way than I remember experiencing it as a child. My experience as a child sparked a keen interest in how we approach pediatric care, especially as it relates to our psychological and emotional support of children facing serious medical conditions. It was here that I experienced first-hand the power and compassion of medicine, not only in healing but also in bringing unlikely individuals together, such as adults and children, in uncommon yet profound ways. And it was here that I began to take seriously the possibility of becoming a pediatric surgeon.

This is an assignment that focuses on the potential issues of healthcare conflict on members. Additionally, the paper discusses the strategies to implement to prevent dangerous patient outcomes.

Potential issues of healthcare conflict on members

Y‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ou are a family nurse practitioner working in an outpatient primary care office of a large hospital system. The practice has been operating for over 15 years. Many of the administrative and clinical staff were hired when the practice opened. You have been in the practice for less than 3 months. In that short amount of time, you have witnessed several of the clinical staff engaging in heated arguments with each other, sometimes in-patient areas. You overhear an argument occurring today between two staff. You pick up a patient’s chart and notice a very low blood pressure that the medical assistant failed to notify you about.

When you confront the MA, she states that she was going to report the vital signs to you when she became engaged in the heated argument you overheard and forgot to notify you. Unfortunately, this pattern of behavior is not unusual in this pra‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍ctice. Working with staff who cannot cooperate effectively can negatively influence your ability to spend time with patients, can impede the flow of patients through the office, and could impact patient safety.

Case Study Responses:

Firstly, analyze the case study for potential issues for members of the healthcare team from office conflict. Contrast the potential effects for each member of the healthcare team based upon the required readings from the week. Discuss the potential ethical and legal implications for each of the following practice members:

  • Medical assistant
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Medical Director
  • Practice

Secondly, what strategies would you implement to prevent further episodes of potentially dangerous patient outcomes?

Lastly, what leadership qualities would you apply to effect positive change in the practice? Focus on the culture of the practice‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍

Read from “The professionalization of the Physician”

1.    Read from “The professionalization of the Physician” to subtitle “The Control of Medical Education”.
2.    Compose a 2-3 Page APA formatted paper explaining how the Flexner Report changed medical education in US.

More details;

Medicine is undergoing rapid changes. Health care reform will undoubtedly have a huge impact on the profession and will result in more patients with insurance coverage and less reimbursement per patient. Even without health care reform, pressures to control the cost of care will increase, because the US currently spends more on health care than other developed countries yet has generally poorer outcomes.

In addition, consumer groups have been questioning the quality of medical care since the 1999 Institute of Medicine Report that estimated that about 98,000 Americans die per year because of medical errors. The pay-for-performance model is now embedded within Medicare’s payment system, with as much as 5% of gross revenue dependent on star rating and another sizable amount of money allocated for meaningful use of information technology. There will likely be shortages of nurses, physicians, and other health care providers at the same time we face the challenge of providing coverage for more patients. Costs will continue to increase because of new technology, new and expensive medications, and the aging of our population.

The Control of Medical Education

The application of intelligent control system to the teaching effect evaluation of functional comprehensive experimental teaching is important. Intelligent control is to study and use some structure mechanism of human brain, knowledge and experience to control the system. With the intelligent control, the problem of control pattern can be regarded as the problem of recognition pattern.

The recognition pattern is the change of recognized signal into the action signal. Additionally, control system of neural network has good intelligence and robustness. It can deal with the control problem of complicated industrial production process with high dimension, nonlinearity, strong coupling and uncertainty. Its remarkable characteristic is that it has the learning ability, it can constantly correct the connection between units and store them, so it has good mapping ability for the nonlinear system which is difficult to model.
