Health Care Problem Analysis

Health Care Problem Analysis

Write a 3–5 page paper that analyzes a selected ethical problem in health care. We wrap things up with an assessment that concerns the most urgent problem in the ethics of health care—which you will determine. It may be something that affects the entire country, a specific region, or a community (such as rural or urban communities). You may choose a problem within your own community. It may be something that affects a particular profession or field in health care. Your paper can focus on something you have read about or a firsthand experience as a health care professional or consumer. SHOW LESS Demonstration of Proficiency By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria: Competency 1: Articulate ethical issues in health care. Effectively summarize ethical issues surrounding a health care problem. Competency 2: Apply sound ethical thinking related to a health care issue. Demonstrate sound ethical thinking in applying ethical principles and moral theories to a specific case. Competency 3: Analyze ethical issues associated with patient care from the perspectives of various health care professionals. Analyze an ethical problem from the perspectives of various stakeholders. The Role of Ethics Committees Most health care organizations today have an ethics committee comprising various staff members and community members. The committee consults with staff and administrators on cases posing particularly challenging ethical dilemmas, but it has other functions as well.

Consider the following: What are the primary duties of an ethics committee? On what types of cases does the committee consult? Does the committee simply determine what should be done in such cases? What kinds of professional roles are represented on ethics committees? What is the value of ethics committees to your professional role? If you have direct experience with ethics committees, what have you observed? Preparation Identify a current issue in health care ethics that you consider urgent. This may be an issue at the national level, in your own community, or anywhere in between. You may focus on something you have read about or know from firsthand experience as a health care professional or consumer. Instructions Write an analysis of a selected ethical problem in health care. You must respond to each of the following criteria. You may choose to respond to any or all of the prompts below each criterion. Effectively summarize ethical issues surrounding a health care problem. What is the problem? Which communities and populations does it affect? What are the ethical issues raised by the problem? Demonstrate sound ethical thinking in applying ethical principles and moral theories to a specific problem. What are the reasons you consider it the most important (or among the most important problems)? What is the cause or causes of this problem? Why does it persist? Apply ethical theories and principles to the selected ethical problem. Which ethical principles (and perhaps moral theories) are most relevant to understanding this problem as an ethical issue? Analyze the ethical problem from the perspectives of various stakeholders. Who are the key stakeholders regarding this problem: the affected health care consumers (patients or clients) and health care professionals (such as doctors, nurses, administrators)? Are there other stakeholders, such as community or government groups? Are there any institutional policies or legal or regulatory considerations that affect the problem? Is there a conflict of interest at the heart of this problem? If so, what is the conflict and who are the stakeholders with competing interests? Assess the policy, legal, and regulatory components to the ethical problem. Which communities or regions does it affect most? Is this a localized problem or a national problem? What legal and regulatory issues have an influence on this problem? Which institutional policies affect this problem? Develop a solution to the ethical problem based on ethical theories and principles. What is the best solution to this problem and why? What are the best resources for solving this problem? How did you make this determination? Submission Requirements

Promoting better patient care

Promoting better patient care

As a healthcare professional, you will be a part of an interdisciplinary team.

That team will communicate together about the patient from different points of view in order to provide the best treatment plan. You will choose two allied health specialties from either The Association of Schools for Allied Health Professions website or the textbook. (I would like for one of the specialties to be pulmonology if possible.

I don’t care what the other specialty is. Thanks!) Write a paper of 500-750 words addressing the specialties that would interact during a typical workday in a hospital, a long-term care facility, and an outpatient clinic. You will specifically address three out of the following six questions in your paper:

What is their function? How does it affect your specialty? How does it affect the patient? If a facility did not have a particular specialty, who would be able to take over that function? Would you be willing to be cross-trained for the function? Is there a written policy for coverage issues? Rationing of Health Care

In Oregon, the Medicaid program was extended to thousands of Oregonians who had previously been uninsured. To help pay for this extension, the breadth of services available to Medicaid recipients was reduced such that recipients lost access to some care that might have been beneficial. You are the Governor of Oregon and you have to testify in a lawsuit alleging that the program is unfair because it deprives Medicaid recipients of certain services enjoyed by privately insured people. What is your response?

Putting it All Together

You currently work for the development department of Sunny Manor Nursing and Rehab Center. Sunny Manor was once a privately owned small skilled nursing home in Sunny Beach, Florida until it was sold 6 years ago to a larger group of investors known for buying older nursing homes and developing them into larger more modern skilled nursing and rehab centers. Sunny Beach itself is a small retirement community close to larger beach towns. Most of the residents are 55 years or older, and there is a growing population of 70+ retired adults. However, the city is known for being technologically advanced for a retirement community. In fact, the city has a popular social media page followed by many residents and a very popular online newsletter that can be accessed through most social media programs. Also, 5 years ago, a brand new hospital opened just outside of Sunny Beach. This brought some the top physicians and surgeons in the state to the area. Sunny Manor recently finished a major renovation, updating the previous long-term-care wings and adding a new wing with 20 new rooms. The new wing is solely dedicated to sub-acute rehab services, and the facility also added a new updated therapy room with an expanded therapy staff and modern high-tech equipment. After working in care coordination and admissions for the past several years, you have been promoted to the development department and tasked with marketing the new facility. The goal is to build a stronger relationship with the discharge staff and physicians at the new hospital and expand a broader reach to the community. The first step is for you to analyze and research the changing community and develop a marketing proposal for your boss, the director of development, on how to best connect with the community of Sunny Beach and increase referrals from the new hospital. For this task, develop a summary marketing proposal on the above scenario that includes the following elements: Evaluate the potential impact of the updated facility and new therapy services on potential improvements in patient satisfaction and developing new marketing share. Assess possible methods to build rapport within Sunny Beach and surrounding communities. Develop a plan for communicating with the community better through social media by connecting Sunny Manor to the residents of Sunny Beach through digital marketing. Provide details on how ongoing research into the community will help Sunny Manor stay ahead of the competition and well connected with community. Consider concepts in monitoring the changing demographics of the community and growing health care sector. Propose a research design model including all the key elements of the research design. Apply an assessment tool and implementation plan such as the Model for Improvement (Plan-Do-Study-Act [PDSA]). Conclude with recommending models and/or tools that will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the development teams’ efforts on an ongoing basis . The body of the resultant report should be 6-7 pages and include at least 7 relevant peer-reviewed academic or professional references published within the past 5years.

The benchmark assesses the following competencies: 3.3 Provide individualized education to diverse patient populations in a variety of health care settings. The RN to BSN program at Universities meet the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities. Based on the feedback offered by the provider, identify the best approach for teaching. Prepare a presentation based on the Teaching Work Plan and present the information to your community. Options for Delivery Select one of the following options for delivery and prepare the applicable presentation: PowerPoint presentation – no more than 30 minutes Pamphlet presentation – 1 to 2 pages Poster presentation Selection of Community Setting These are considered appropriate community settings. The Role of Economic Principles in Healthcare Decision Making

In your readings this week, you explored the basic economic principles of trade, choice, opportunity costs, and scarcity, along with the law of demand. What are the potential positive and negative impacts of applying these principles to the healthcare industry? How do you think a healthcare organization should balance the economic principles described with issues of health, life, and death in terms of its policy decisions and strategic planning? Can you put monetary value on a life?

Community/public health nursing is nursing care that is population-focused and occurs in non-hospital settings. Numerous nursing theories can provide the structure for community/public health nursing; however, nursing theories that incorporate components of the general systems theory frequently provide the framework for the practice of community/public health nursing. Historically, nurses have made significant contributions to the field of public health. From providing maternal-child care to poor women in the late 1800s, to promoting hygiene among school aged children in the early 1900s, to providing environmental and safety care to industrial workers during World War I, nurses have been instrumental in shaping health policies (Maurer & Smith, 2013). Today, community/public health nurses have a key role in identifying and developing plans of care to address local, national, and international health issues.
