Firstly, In this unit lesson, we discuss the risk factors associated with the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Ergonomic injuries are prevalent in the healthcare industry due to the nature of the work required as illustrated in our lesson with Mr. Bach, a certified nurse assistant who injured his back while attempting to assist a resident from the floor to the bed. In recent years, many facilities have implemented policies, purchased equipment, and provided training to address ergonomic injuries. However, WMSDs, specifically back injuries, are still pretty commonplace within the industry. It is unclear if healthcare workers recognize the risks of lifting and moving patients.

What is WMSDs?
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons, and nerves. Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, and tension neck syndrome are examples.
What causes WMSD?
Examples of work conditions that may lead to WMSD include routine lifting of heavy objects, daily exposure to whole body vibration, routine overhead work, work with the neck in chronic flexion position, or performing repetitive forceful tasks.
Why are musculoskeletal disorders a problem in the workplace?
Exposure to these workplace risk factors puts workers at a higher level of MSD risk. It’s common sense: high task repetition, forceful exertions and repetitive/sustained awkward postures fatigue the worker’s body beyond their ability to recover, leading to a musculoskeletal imbalance and eventually an MSD.
