The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus
The first symbol is the devil and the angel. This represents that every situation has two sides. There is always a good and a bad, a right and a wrong. 2. The next symbol is that of blood. This represents God’s willingness to offer redemption. This is seen when Faustus uses his blood to sign the contract with the devil, and God keeps drying the blood to keep him from signing. 3. The third sign is the use of being invisible when Faustus appears at the Pope’s bathroom. Faustus hides behind being invisible to get away with tormenting the Pope.
Thesis: The use of symbols is obvious when Faustus talks with both an angel and devil, uses his own blood, and becomes invisible, in order to do as he pleases. While at first glance this seems like a standard Renaissance play, there is also a way in which it speaks to our fears about acquiring knowledge– fears which manifested heavily during the Scientific Revolution and the Renaissance, when religion and reason had their first significant clashes.

In addition, the play deals heavily with issues of free speech and institutional criticism, and, in a very real sense, was way before its time. Using the semiotic method (Sign, Significance, So What) create a thesis-driven essay which answers one or more of the following questions: How does the play deal with issues surrounding knowledge, the pursuit of forbidden knowledge, and the conflict between knowledge and faith? Additionally, how does the play deal with issues of free speech (or lack thereof?) Additionally, how does the play use humor to get its point across? Also, remember, you do not have to answer or address each of these questions in the essay.
Focusing on just one question is the best way to stay coherent. Start by nailing down “signs” within the play, and try to figure out how Marlowe utilizes these signs to create meaning. Remember that topic sentences must also follow the semiotic model: sign, significance, so what? Refer to the handout: The Semiotic Iceberg in Blackboard for further clarification on how to use this method. You must also include direct quotes from the play in each body paragraph.
