The kairos of today is how much COVID-19 is impacting the economy. We are gradually opening up the economy. However, the understanding is that these actions will lead to more COVID-19 cases. We are also paying a tremendous economic cost that will probably last for years because of the because of the “shelter at home” requirement.

As we gain control of the coronavirus cases, more of our economy will open. Each state is doing this differently. Some states have done little in terms of the “shelter at home” request from the federal government. You may want to look at what has happened in those states in terms of COVID-19 cases. California has decided to open in “stages”.

The debate is over how fast we should open up different parts of the economy.

In your discussion address the question should we sacrifice public health to stimulate the economy? (Remember this is the big question in An Enemy of the People.) Maybe handle the question in terms of “to what extent” in terms of opening up the economy and facing the public health crisis. What compromise should be reached? Please don’t be simplistic with this. People are losing jobs and business as a result of this debate, and people are losing lives as a result of this public health crisis.

You may want to look at other states that are seeing a growth of the virus. You may want to look at the spikes we have seen in COVID-19 cases after Memorial Day and Mother’s Day. Further, you may want to look at the consequences to small business, industry, and education as a result of the economic shutdown. You may want to look at infection rates. Also, people are already having this discussion if you would like to borrow ideas from them. Don’t regurgitate what other people are saying. Critically Think! Create your own solution!
