Summary, Rhetorical Analysis, and Response Paper

In this 3-5 page paper, you will choose one of the following texts and summarize, rhetorically analyze, and respond to it: “Thick of Tongue,” “The Myth of the Latin Woman,” “The Careless Language of Sexual Violence,” OR “Our Declaration.”

Audience: I am the audience; however, this essay does need to have academic discourse and tone. Do not address me directly in your essay.

Format: Your format is an academic paper.

Please have 1-inch margins all around.

Insert a heading in the top left corner at 1-inch margin with your name, Professor Chandler, ENGL 1301-239, and the date (Day Month Year).

Then, insert a page header at a half-inch margin in the TOP RIGHT with only your last name and the page number.

Your paper must be 3-5 pages and double-spaced.

Use only TIMES NEW ROMAN size 12-pt font.

Do not add extra spaces between your paragraphs.

Make sure your paper includes a thesis statement with body paragraphs that support any conclusions you’ve drawn and refer back to your thesis consistently throughout the paper. Do not forget to include a conclusion or a title which should be centered right below your headings with no bold, underline, or italics font.

Your paper should be in MLA format and follow proper MLA citation rules for your primary text and any secondary sources you may have addressed..

DO NOT forget the hanging indent or to double-space your citations in your Works Cited page..

Topic:

For this paper, you are choosing a text from the 4 I listed at the top of this page.

You will summarize the text, rhetorically analyze it, and then respond to its argument.

In your introduction paragraph, summarize your text without any personal opinion, direct quotations, or specific examples from the text. Using a neutral tone and summarize the main points of the text.

In your thesis statement, you will introduce the text’s main claim/argument and then let your readers know what argument/claim you are making about your text’s claim/argument. So, your thesis could be 2 sentences long.

Your first body paragraph will be your rhetorical analysis. You need to analyze, interpret, and evaluate your text and its argument. This can include the following elements: tone, style, structure, use/lack of use of the 3 rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos), visuals (if applicable), and/or fallacies (if applicable). You do not need to address all of these; however, you need to choose enough topics to cover for the length of this paper. Your topic sentence needs to state which rhetorical strategies you will be analyzing. The final sentence of your rhetorical analysis response should state whether or not, overall, you believe the author’s argument was successfully effective or convincing or not.

Your body paragraphs should support your thesis.

Further, provide textual evidence from your chosen text’s argument which you will expand on and evaluate for your readers. Include a “mini-conclusion” at the end of each body paragraph as well which sums up that body paragraph and potentially transitions into the next. Don’t forget to include in your paragraphs both your analysis of a rhetorical strategy and your evaluation of that strategy (whether you think it was effective or ineffective in convincing readers and WHY).

Your other body paragraphs will consist of your response to what the text said (agreement/disagreement). Also, your personal response (personal connection or reaction to the text). You can both agree AND disagree with portions of the text, but you must explain what exactly you are agreeing or disagreeing with and WHY.

This is where you may need to refer to outside resources to support any claims you make about your text and its argument. For example, if you are claiming that rape culture is pervasive in America then you will need to back that claim up with evidence from Gay’s text. However, if you disagree that rape culture exists in American then you need to back that claim up with evidence provided by CREDIBLE outside resources that support your claim. It is up to you to find the resources you might need to support your claims. A list of credible websites can be found at mediabiasfactcheck.com.

In your conclusion:

you will lastly sum-up your main claims from your paper. Do NOT include anything new in your conclusion about the text. Conclusions should only consist of restatements.

This textbook is used at many colleges and universities all over the country, so there is a plethora of options to plagiarize from, should you so choose to. However, I will be using a third-party application to scan all papers for plagiarism. This is your one and only warning. When you choose to plagiarize, you do a disservice to yourself.
