Your director has discovered that the entire staff needs training on the systemic influences that have lead to the over-representation of Indigenous youth in custody. The staff needs to learn about how poverty, racism, and the residential school legacy contribute to the high rates of incarceration endured by Indigenous youth. She has tasked you to write a brief research paper on this topic that you will share with your colleagues. At first, you were nervous about this task because you are not an expert in overrepresentation of Indigenous youth in custody. Your director told you not to worry. She expects you to learn about the topic as you write about it. She has chosen you for this task because you are an effective writer, a keen researcher, and a critical thinker. You are not without guidance, though! Your director wants research from three different academic resources. To demonstrate integrity, you will provide in-text citations and a complete reference page. Your director has even provided you with a basic outline. • State the purpose of your research paper and provide an overview of your main points. • Provide information on two of the following topics: poverty, racism, residential school legacy. Your discussion will likely include definitions and examples. Discuss the effect of your two topics in relation to over-representation of Indigenous youth in custody. • Connect this discussion to the professional practice of your CYC colleagues. This part of the research paper is key. Tell the staff what CYCs can do to show clients that they understand how the past influences the present. • Conclude with a summary of key points that demonstrates how you met your purpose. Within your director’s specific parameters for the research paper, you do have some choice. The staff needs to learn about how poverty, racism, and the residential school legacy contribute to the high rates of incarceration endured by Indigenous youth. However, to avoid overwhelming the staff, your director wants you to discuss only two of these topics. You get to choose which ones. Remember: Your director wants more than a history lesson or a collection of statistics. She wants you to articulate how the information you provide is useful to a CYC’s professional practice.
