What is Happiness

What is Happiness? How happiness and well-being are defined varies around the globe. For instance, in some cultures, happiness is closely linked to economic well-being and in other cultures, happiness is linked to being closer to home. As an additional example, in some societies, happiness is connected to individual advancement, whereas in other societies one’s personal happiness is linked to the well-being of the group. For this Discussion, you will explore the influences of happiness and how they vary according to culture.

To Prepare: Review this week’s Learning Resources and choose two influences on happiness or well-being that vary across cultures.

By Day 3 Post and explain the two influences on happiness you selected and explain why they vary according to culture. Note: Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work. <400 approx words> Discussion 2:

What Brings Happiness Varies by Culture Components of happiness and well-being are dependent on each individual culture. For instance, in one culture, feeling connected to nature may bring happiness while in another culture experiencing happiness may be linked to receiving an award or praise from others.

For this Discussion, you will read several resources describing how happiness may vary by cultural context and even how words and terms for happiness may not be universal and thus may not appear in every culture. As you consider these Learning Resources, think about the influence or term for happiness and whether it appears in every culture.

To Prepare: Review this week’s Learning Resources and select an influence for happiness or a term for happiness that does not appear in every culture.

By Day 4 Post an explain the influence or term for happiness you selected and explain why you think it does not appear every culture. Discussion: Designing Qualitative Research As you recall from earlier weeks, various philosophical orientations hold unique epistemological and ontological assumptions. These assumptions return to the forefront of attention when considering how to evaluate the rigor or quality of various qualitative research designs. Typically, when speaking of validity, qualitative researchers are referring to research that is credible and trustworthy, i.e., the extent to which one can have confidence in the study’s findings (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Generalizability, a marker of reliability, is typically not a main purpose of qualitative research because the researcher rarely selects a random sample with a goal to generalize to a population or to other settings and groups. Rather, a qualitative researcher’s goal is often to understand a unique event or a purposively selected group of individuals. Therefore, when speaking of reliability, qualitative researchers are typically referring to research that is consistent or dependable (Lincoln & Guba, 1985), i.e., the extent to which the findings of the study are consistent with the data that was collected. For this Discussion, you will explain criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research and consider the connection of such criteria to philosophical orientations. You will also consider the ethical implications of designing qualitative research.

With these thoughts in mind: By Day 4 Post an explanation of two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards of your discipline. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions.

Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a qualitative approach. Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.
