Place your name, the date due, and your course(English 312) in the upper left-hand corner of your first page. Your paper’s title should be centered on the top of the first page. Do NOT use quotation marks around your paper title! REPORT ORGANIZATION Paragraph 1(50-65 words): Introduce the play by title and author and make several generalizations about your topic to spark interest in it. Also mention the two critics by names and the title of the works that you will be discussing as you see in this sample introduction: Shakespeare’s King Lear is a remarkable play for many reasons, including the playwright’s portrayal of the proud, old monarch. King Lear holds our attention on the stage owing to his pitifully rash action and its consequences as well as to the depiction of his strong emotions as he discovers his monumental error. Two of the most interesting critical viewpoints on the character of Lear include John Wilson’s article, “Language and Insanity in Shakespeare’s King Lear,” Shakespeare Quarterly, 37(2005), 56-75, and Susan Smith’s discussion in her book, Eloquence and Action in Shakespeare’s Tragedies(University of Chicago Press, 1998). NOTE: The information included in the sources cited in your introduction is your documentation. You should not use a “Works Cited” (bibliography) page for this paper. Follow the sample in-text citation format above! Paragraphs 2-4 (300-350 words total): Compare and contrast the critical views by discussing THREE aspects of the character or theme that BOTH of your sources discuss. An aspect may be a character trait or a facet of a thematic topic, or it may be a specific scene or event in the play. A “character trait” is NOT a factual statement, but an assessment based on a critic’s study of the character’s personality and behavior. Use the following as your outline for these paragraphs of your paper: I. First Area or Feature of Character/Theme A. First Critic’s View B. Second Critic’s View II. Second Area or Feature of Character/Theme A. First Critic’s View B. Second Critic’s View III. Third Area or Feature of Character/Theme A. First Critic’s View B. Second Critic’s View Paragraph 5 (100-100 words): Indicate which of the two critical views, as a whole, is more INTERESTING or MORE ILLUMINATING for you and support your ofterpinion with some specific reasons or logical points. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT: Avoid superficial fluff and remember that 100 words is the ABSOLUTE minimum for this paragraph. Paragraph 6 (50-65 words): Conclusion: avoid repeating yourself here!
