Select one of the following compositions to interpret and analyze in light of the readings assigned so far in class: 1. John Cage’s 4’33 (1952) 2. Pierre Schaeffer’s Étude aux tourniquets (1948) Instructions: Each composition from the above list relates sound to different notions, experiences, philosophies and methods. Your analysis should contain both relevant historical (and not biographical) context as well as close formal readings of the pieces you choose to analyze. One can discuss or elaborate on multiple issues and notions departing from each piece. Your papers should reflect on one or two of these notions in a critical analysis of the works. In a sense, the compositions are points of departure from which you will discuss, develop or challenge different issues relevant to each musical piece. Your papers should include at least TWO books to support your analysis. References such as wikipedia or blogs like artsy, Forbes magazine are not serious or valid sources. Please make sure you reference all the sources in your paper correctly, i.e. according to the Chicago Manual of Style, APA or any style you are accustomed to as you will also be graded on this. Be consistent throughout your essay. Your paper should be 1000 words, no more. Please don’t forget to include an original TITLE to your paper.
