POLS 2302 “Introduction to Political Theory”
Submit a hard-copy and an electronic copy of an essay (not to exceed 1500 words, single-spaced 12 font) in response to ONE of the topics below.

Overall, you are asked to think about the political ideas that are at the heart of your chosen topic. Persuasive essays will emphasize a text-based but also critical/explorative engagement with key political ideas; illustrative facts and examples, bringing those ideas to life, will enrich the point of view you choose to present and defend.
Choose ONE of the following:

Firstly, What conception of power should we prefer, and why?
Question #2:
Secondly, “Power and morality are inter-dependent concepts”. Agree or disagree?
Question #3:
Thirdly, Critically explore and evaluate different concepts of toleration.
Question #4:
Fourthly, To what extent are democracy and tolerance compatible or at odds?
Question #5:
Further, “A feminist perspective is essential to understanding democracy”. Discuss.
Question #6:
Also, Is there political significance to the distinction between sex and gender?
As you write your essays, refer carefully to the “Grading Rubric”. Additionally, here are other standards/guidelines/expectations you will want to consider:
Firstly, Passing marks require a clear exposition (orderly presentation, clarity about key terms and assumptions) of the issues in the chosen question.
Secondly, Higher marks can be earned if an essay demonstrates not just expository skill but analysis (identifying key elements of the topic, identifying assumptions pro and con, presenting a conclusion that competently rises from expository content).
Thirdly, Highest marks for essays require going beyond exposition and analysis. In particular, a detailed interpretation of the question’s meaning and scope (presentation of relevant sources, strengths and weaknesses of alternative points of view). Highest commendation requires exposition and analysis and interpretation.
