Attention, Performance, and Cell Phones

Research the topic of cell phone use while driving. Framing the discussion in terms of the effects of these two competing activities from a cognitive perspective.

From the “Implications” box on page 72 of Anderson’s Cognitive Psychology. (Please use this reference as one of the three) and its Implications. It is apparent that there is a great deal of evidence that suggests that making telephone calls can reduce the ability of a driver to perform this task well. See attached image.

You may use this item on page 72 as a beginning point to delve deeper into the topic in a paper of your own. You should develop a discussion of the task demands and the problems involved with focusing and shifting attention, both when attempting to multitask as well as when engaging in only a single task. Also, you should discuss the differences of talking with a passenger versus talking on the phone. Also, the differences that may (or may not) exist between hands-free phone calls and calls where one must hold the phone. You should also discuss the very current topic of text messaging while driving. Discussing how this differs from telephone calls in the depth and number of additional task demands.

While the book can be used as a primary source, there should be a minimum of two other sources.

The paper should use APA standards for formatting (double spacing, running header in all caps, page numbering in the header, and 12-point Times New Roman font). The paper should include a cover page, references, appropriate citations, and the student’s own words with quoted material used rarely if at all. Lastly, the paper should be no less than 3 pages long (not counting the cover or references pages).
