Using all of the material provided in this week’s module, including the opening statement outline and assigned reading in the course text, draft an opening statement in a script format.
PLEASE USE THE SONNY AND MAY SCENARIO WHEN WRITING THE SCRIPT.
Please use a conversational tone that invites personal connection and helps develop rapport.
If you’re not sure whether to include a topic or specific points, include them for now. You can omit them when you don’t need them in different situations.
Make this your own work. If you “borrow” another person’s words or style, it won’t appear authentic and you won’t be believable. Some students have previously copied opening statements they found online and, unfortunately, their work earned a zero. I suggest that you not go down that path.
It’s fine if you decide to follow the outline I’ve provided. It’s a decent place to start. You’ll begin to get a feel for your personal style and approach.
Please submit your personal opening statement in this assignment.
Finally, take a look at the following videos that reflect the Sonny and May scenario you’ve seen before.
The first video, Separate Opening Session with Sonny, gives the mediator time to establish the framework solely with him.

The second video, Separate Opening Session with May, gives the mediator the same opportunity solely with her.

The third video, Joint Opening Session, reflects the approach when the mediator lays the framework with both parties present.

These will prove helpful as you draft your own opening statement and record a video of the appointed mediator delivering an opening statement to your group this week.
