Evaluate the impact of altitude exposure and trans meridian
This is a paper that is focusing on the student to evaluate the impact of altitude exposure and trans meridian. The paper also provides additional information to use in the writing and submission of the assignment paper.
Evaluate the impact of altitude exposure and trans meridian
Module Assessments & Tailored Assessment Criteria
Assignment 1 – Case Study
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Design an appropriate training and monitoring strategy for a prescribed sport.
4. Understand the impact of different environmental conditions on performance and also event preparation.
5. Rationalise and critically evaluate the efficacy of specific acclimatisation/conditioning programmes.
For this assessment you are required to critically evaluate the impact of altitude exposure and trans meridian air travel on athletic performance. In addition, you are to design an appropriate training/pre acclimatisation strategy for an endurance athlete who will be competing in the Everest Marathon in Nepal, where the race is held at an elevation of 17,000 ft.
You must provide a fully reference rationale for you strategy and also consider any nutritional/hydration considerations for travelling and competing at such altitudes.
The case study should be include the following sections:
Introduction – Here you will provide a detailed critical review of the effects that both altitude and air travel across multiple time zones has on human physiology and athletic performance. You should also critically review current methods of altitude training and strategies to combat jetlag.
Acclimatisation Strategy –
Here you should provide an overview of the training/pre- acclimatisation plan you would put in place for an athlete competing in the Everest marathon. You should provide details on how long prior to the race you would start the plan, show what the plan includes, i.e. the altitude training plan and how you would manipulate this over a number of week. (similar for any sleeping plans to combat jet lag, i.e. when the athlete should sleep).
Rationale –
Here you should provide a clear and referenced justification for the strategy you proposed in the previous section.
