Part 2: Take these two examples of indirect characterization from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and rewrite them as examples of direct characterization.
Example 1: Atticus Finch speaking to his daughter Scout. What does this exchange tell us about his character? Write a direct characterization statement.
“First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
Example 2: Atticus Finch speaking about his court case. What does this statement tell us about his character? Also, Write a direct characterization statement.
“This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.”
