Cultural Ethical and Legal Issues: Crisis in the Schools Cultural Audit of School
Description Different communities and schools may react to crises differently. It is important for school counselors to understand the demographics of their communities in order to provide culturally sensitive interventions. Take, for example, the complexity that language barriers can create, and the number of languages that might be spoken in a given school community or area. What difficulties might have to be overcome if the language spoken by the school counselor does not match that of the communities’ inhabitants? How will you communicate with and support vulnerable people in the community? What cultural, ethical and legal issues do school counselors encounter when a crisis occurs? For this Assignment, you will create a profile of the cultural composition of a school/district in your community and use this profile in your Final Project. The Assignment: (4–5 pages): *Describe the demographics of your community. Mention the various dynamics of your community, including: race/ethnicity, languages/dialects spoken, age, gender, religion, refugee/immigrant status, income and poverty levels, and the percentage of students living in rural vs. urban areas. If there is a history of trauma, torture, or war experience, and history of racial/ethnic relations that exist within the greater community, please explain it. *For the cultures represented in your student population, identify the meaning of suffering, pain, and death relevant to the norms of the your students’ cultural groups *Analyze the available resources in your community, such as the formal and informal community resources. Include a list of community resources that you have identified, such as a list of interpreters and translators (if appropriate for your population). Explain whether these resources are adequate in responding to potential crises, and identify any cultural problems that your school community may face. *Anticipate and identify possible solutions to cultural problems that may arise in the event of a crisis. *Explain how you will identify the full names of the parents and guardians of all children in the school, since last names can differ within families *Explain how this information will help you in the event of a crisis at your school.
