5.4 Tasting, Smelling, and Touching

Learning Objectives

Firstly, summarize how the senses of taste and olfaction transduce stimuli into perceptions.

Secondly, describe the process of transduction in the senses of touch and proprioception.

Finally, Outline the gate control theory of pain. Explain why pain matters and how it may be controlled.

Although vision and hearing are by far the most important senses, human sensation is rounded out by four others, each of which provides an essential avenue to a better understanding of and response to the world around us. These other senses are touchtaste, and smell, and our sense of body position and movement (proprioception).

Tasting

Taste is important not only because it allows us to enjoy the food we eat, but, even more crucial, because it leads us toward foods that provide energy (sugar, for instance) and away from foods that could be harmful. Many children are picky eaters for a reason. They are biologically predispose d to be very careful about what they eat. Together with the sense of smell, taste helps us maintain appetite, assess potential dangers (such as the odour of a gas leak or a burning house), and avoid eating poisonous or spoiled food.

Our ability to taste begins at the taste receptors on the tongue. The tongue detects six different taste sensations, known respectively as sweet, salty, sour, bitter, piquancy (spicy), and umami (savory). Umami is a meaty taste associated with meats, cheeses, soy, seaweed, and mushrooms, and is particularly found in monosodium glutamate (MSG), a popular flavour enhancer (Ikeda, 1909/2002; Sugimoto & Ninomiya, 2005).

• Include all data sheets

• Include all calculations sheets. Calculations should be shown and easy to read for the instructor.

• Include responses to questions on a separate piece of paper indicated in the experiment description

• Include any additional work as assigned by your instructor in the video.

Part 1 – The purpose of the experiment

What was the purpose of this experiment?  What were you trying to do?  Note this is not the procedure but rather a summary of the goals of the experiment.

The purpose of this experiment was to illustrate the various types of measurements that are done in the chemical laboratory and in the workplace.

Part 2 – The procedures used

In this section, you outline what procedure was follow ed.  If this procedure was given in a handout or is in a text, then all you need to do is identify that particular reference rather than rewriting the entire procedure.

The procedure for this experiment was provided in the handout “Measurement in the Chemistry Laboratory” by Mendeleev (1868).  Additional information was list in the textbook/lab manual “Chemistry “ by Noble (2005There).

Part 3 – The results

In this section, you list all the results you got, along with any class data that was collect.  All calculations, equations, reactions are included in this section. The results gathered in this experiment are provided in the data table on the following page.

Part 4 – The conclusion

This is the part of the experiment where you draw conclusions about your lab work.    What do your results mean?  What did you learn from this experiment?  This is not a restatement of your experimental

results but an attempt to make some sense of the data.  This is where the majority of writing takes place in a lab report.

Examine how the educational background of Emmy (Amalie) Noether contributed to her math career.

You should explore what drove Emmy (Amalie) Noether and also identify any other interest she may have had.

You should highlight the main contributions to mathematics she made and her focus on one contribution in greater depth.

Also, identify the significance of the contributions that Emmy (Amalie) Noether has made.

If possible, you should make connections to the importance for school mathematics.

Emmy Noether, in full Amalie Emmy Noether, (born March 23, 1882, Erlangen, Germany—died April 14, 1935, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, U.S.), German mathematician whose innovations in higher algebra gained her recognition as the most creative abstract algebraist of modern times.

Noether was certified to teach English and French in schools for girls in 1900, but she instead chose to study mathematics at the University of Erlangen (now University of Erlangen-Nürnberg). At that time, women were only allowed to audit classes with the permission of the instructor. She spent the winter of 1903–04 auditing classes at the University of Göttingen taught by mathematicians David HilbertFelix Klein, and Hermann Minkowski and astronomer Karl Schwarzschild.

She returned to Erlangen in 1904 when women were allowed to be full students there. Noether received a Ph.D. degree from Erlangen in 1907, with a dissertation on algebraic invariants. She remained at Erlangen, where she worked without pay on her own research and assisting her father, mathematician Max Noether (1844–1921).

Identify the factors that will affect the Thomas siblings decisions

This is a paper that is focusing on the identify the factors that will affect the Thomas siblings’ decisions. The paper also provides additional information to use in writing the assignment paper clearly.

Identify the factors that will affect the Thomas siblings’ decisions

Agnes and Mark Thomas are 83 and 84 years of age, respectively. They have four adult children and eight grandchildren; all live within 25 miles of the couple. Mrs. Thomas likes the family to have dinner together at least twice a month at her home. Over the past 6 months, her children have noticed that their mother often forgets her grandchildren’s names. Mr. Thomas, a retired firefighter and once avid swimmer, has arthritis in his spine, which has decreased his mobility.

Mr. Thomas’s elder daughter, 58-year-old Arlene, is developmentally delayed and has lived in various state-run residential facilities since she was 5 years old. Arlene’s siblings had little contact with her when she was growing up except on birthdays and holidays. Recently, the director of the facility sent the Thomas’s a letter to inform them that the state is closing the facility and that they need to find housing for Arlene.

Laura, a nurse from the residential facility where Arlene lives, phones Agnes to arrange a home visit. Agnes tells Laura that Arlene cannot live with her and Mark, and she asks Laura to talk to her youngest son Jim, 47 years old. Although Jim has had minimal contact with his sister, he agrees to meet with Laura. He tells her that his parents’ health is declining, especially his mother’s, and proposes that Arlene might be able to move into the in-law apartment in his home. Jim and Laura arrange another meeting that includes Arlene, as well as Jim’s wife and their adolescent twin daughters.

Questions:
1. What potential conflicts can arise in this family?

2. What information about the family’s resources could help to offset their anxiety about Arlene’s change in housing?

3. Who else should be included in this plan?

Identify the factors that will affect the Thomas siblings’ decisions

Laura arranged a meeting at Jim’s home with his family, Arlene, and Nancy, and the social worker assigned to the case. Jim took everyone to see the new facility. Arlene would eat breakfast and lunch at a day program from 7:30 to 4:00 on weekdays and have dinner with the family. Arlene was unhappy with the plan because she does not want to leave her “home.” Jim’s daughters were also upset about their aunt moving into their home and said their life will not be “normal” anymore. Later that week, Laura phoned Jim and Liz to tell them that several vacancies have opened in a residential community. Several of Arlene’s friends are moving there.

Although Arlene would receive a small subsidy to move into the facility, the family would have to pay approximately $2000 a month for expenses. Jim wants to talk to his sisters, especially because their parents’ health is declining. The elder Thomas’s receive homemaker services through their town’s council on ageing. Mrs. Thomas’s dementia is advancing, and she might need placement in an Alzheimer care facility. Mr. Thomas receives a monthly pension, and his savings are limited. The three Thomas siblings have had difficulty trying to agree on care arrangements for both their parents and older sister. The elder of the two, Marilyn, 55 years old, strongly opposes placement. Their sister Alice, 50 years old, is relatively indifferent.

Questions:
1. Identify the factors that will affect the Thomas siblings’ decisions about placement for their mother and sister.

2. What type of community resources could help the Thomas family, especially to help allay their anxieties about finances?

3. How would you support Alice during the decision-making process

In the case of the Thomas family, cultural considerations regarding the care for Arlene are not what people usually think of as “culture.” She has grown up in a culture of a special unit of residential care because of her needs, and has not had a connection with her older brother, who is now faced with decisions about where she will live, within the context of a mother who is cognitively deteriorating.

Questions:

1. Firstly, describe strategies for an open discussion at a family meeting.

2. Secondly, what approaches could help the Thomas family learn about possible placement options?

3. Thirdly, identify social factors that might influence the Thomas family’s decision

Content should be 3 pages in APA format (not including title page and reference page).

Provide at least two evidence based resources (nursing) to support your conclusions-within 5 years.

Essay about the literature that Bob Dylan reads in Chronicles

Essay about the literature that Bob Dylan reads in Chronicles

Bob Dylan: The Author
Length: 4 pages minimum (1000 words); 10 pages maximum; typed, double spaced.
Value: 30%

Task:
Write an expository essay about the literature that Bob Dylan reads in Chronicles.

NOTE: you have to read CHRONICLES by Bob Dylan (volume 1)

Guidelines: An expository essay exposes information about a certain topic. In this case, Bob Dylan, the author who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2016 — NOT the rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer. Additionally, identify and explain his literary influences — (NOT MUSICAL IDOLS) —that Dylan reveals in his autobiography Chronicles.

Furthermore, your introductory paragraph must state your thesis, main idea, about the authors, (not musicians),who helped Bob Dylan’s growth as an artist. For example: Bob Dylan’s lyrics have resonated throughout the world of books with the same seriousness as his literary namesake: Dylan Thomas. “I’d seen some poems by Dylan Thomas.” (p. 78)
Further, the main body of your essay must develop your thesis by quoting all the references that Dylan makes to various literary figures, or texts which have inspired him.

Your concluding paragraph must recapitulate your thesis. This assignment is Googleproof; so going on-line will be pointless.

Content:

Expose the theatre pieces, novels, poems, journals, and pamphlets that shaped Dylan’s literate imagination. Be sure to integrate quotes from chapters one, two, three, four and five. Also, always  indicate the proper pagination in parenthesis. For example: “I had broken myself of the habit of thinking in short song cycles and began reading longer and longer poems to see if I could remember anything I read about in the beginning.” (p. 56)

Self-expression:                                                                                                                                                                         Allow your imagination to blend with Dylan’s imagination like the open mouth of a singer blending with the sound hole of a guitar. Embed similes, metaphors, rhymes, also hyperboles into your essay. Moreover, expose your creativity too.

An expository essay requires objective voicing. So do not use personal pronouns such as “I,” “me,” “you,” “we,” or “our.” Always use the 5 W’s, not generic terms such as “most people,”       or “in today’s society”; nor indefinite pronouns such as “someone,’ “something,” “somewhere,”     or “thing.” Avoid repetition of the same words by finding synonyms in thesaurus.com.

Policies that affect sustainability are of five types (FAO n.d., 48-9):

General economic and social policies intended to influence overall economic growth, trade, price levels, employment, investment and population, attained chiefly by utilizing monetary and fiscal instruments.

Policies relating to agricultural and rural development. Policies of this type are usually intended to influence such factors as the agricultural resource base, agricultural production, consumption of agricultural products, agricultural price levels and variability, rural incomes and the quality of food. They are usually implement via instruments such as taxes and subsidies. Also, direct government production and provision of services, and direct control through regulation.

Policies relating to markets, including the establishment of market institutions and rules, and circumscription of property rights.

Policies aimed at establishing a democratic and participatory process designed to involve all interested groups in decision making and also implementing SARD.

They designed specifically to influence natural resource use and protect the environment. These policies utilize: (i) command and control (effected, for example, by prohibiting or limiting certain resource uses or establishing limits on emissions, with penalties for non-compliance); (ii) economic incentives such as taxes and subsidies; and (iii) persuasive measures such as education and advertising.
