Focus on Ancient Greece’s interest in (choose one): • The Figure • Use and Beauty in Space and Design • Topic discussed and approved by Professor prior to submission To include: 1. You will visit the ROM on October 1. While there, you will choose 1-2 objects or examples of how Ancient Greece interests focused on their use of The Figure OR exploring Space in their art and design. a. You will photographically document these objects/examples *be mindful of museum rules b. You will sketch your chosen objects/examples c. You will collect any research on site (from guides, didactics, books etc) i. TIP: as this is the first site visit, consider documenting more than you need so that you have options once you go to NYC d. Record how you feel in the space or how you react to the object, sensations, memories etc e. Make sure that you write down and include the following information in your Visual Presentation: title, artist/architect (if known), date, location/material 2. You will visit NYC during Week 6. While you are there, you will need to visit an historic building, a museum, a gallery etc. where you will choose 1-2 objects/examples of how either The Figure OR Space has evolved since Ancient Greece while maintaining specific and linked traits. a. You will photographically document these objects/examples b. You will sketch your chosen objects/examples c. You will collect any research on site (from guides, didactics, books etc) d. Record how you feel in the space or how you react to the object, sensations, memories etc e. Make sure that you write down and include the following information in your Visual Presentation: title, artist/architect (if known), date, location/material i. Tip: As you may decide to choose a site/object in NYC that has been created outside of the time period covered in our class, focus more on how the design/object specifically relates and differs from its Ancient Greece comparison. 3. Once you have your primary and experiential research, you will narrow down your selections to 1-2 examples in each NYC and the ROM. You will then extend your research to academic journals, scholarly websites, books etc. that extend your knowledge on the objects/sites that you chose.

a. At this point, you may decide to focus your topic further eg The Bust, or Sites of Spirituality etc 4. Using specific terminology, awareness of material choices, methods of creation, and use of your chosen objects/sites, you will draw visual, cultural, and historical links to the inspiration of Ancient Greece to Western Art and Design. 5. Finally, you will extend your visual analysis to ONE topic: gender, race, sexuality, or class. Find connections of the Ancient Greece context and use of your chosen objects/spaces to your NYC objects/spaces understanding of the same topic. 6. Using all of your content: your photos, sketches, research, and analysis, you will create a dynamic and organized Power Point presentation that teaches your classmates on your topic and exploration of Ancient Greece. a.
