Final Reflection Essay Assignment

Goals and Instructions:
The goal for this final reflection of the course is twofold:

(1) to reflect on what you know about writing, and

(2) to reflect more broadly about some of the key concepts of technical writing overall and specifically your writing in the course. Reflecting on your writing is how you become a better writer. Write at least a 3-page (double spaced) reflection.

There are no incorrect answers to the reflection prompts, but watch for incomplete answers. This assignment asks for your interpretation…what you perceive about specific aspects of writing. The key to writing a solid reflection is constructive thinking: it should go beyond simply answering the prompts to provide a structured, organized, and thoughtful response and reflection about the writing you’ve done. There’s a 3-page minimum – no maximum – to ensure you write enough about each (again, 3 pages is minimum to pass this part of the assignment – aim higher).

Prompts for Final Reflection:

·         What was your perception of writing, technical or otherwise, coming into the course? How has your perception evolved with each major piece of technical writing you have completed, and where does it stand now? How would you define technical writing now?

·         When you approach a writing situation, what knowledge of that situation do you look for before you begin writing? What do you want to know in order to write most effectively?

·         What did you learn about the process of revision, at any of the levels we discussed in class, when you applied it to your assignments? Do you see any patterns in your own work as you revise? What happens in the revision stage – how does engaging in revision affect your writing?

·         What do you think was your best work this semester, and why? What do you think you’ll do differently in writing for contexts outside this course, in future?

·         What will you take from this experience? Are there any lessons learned about your writing process, or your knowledge about writing, that you want to transfer to other contexts? What might you apply to writing in future semesters – in your major or otherwise – or to your workplace now or in future? What do you think has been most valuable about this experience for you?
